Effects of Sulphur Alone and Combination with FYM on Yield Quality of Mustard Grown in Vertisols

The field experiment was conducted on Research Farm of the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur (MP) during Rabi season 2013–14. In the present investigation, the effects of sulphur alone and combination with FYM was studied on yield and quality of mustard grown in a Vertisol which laid in Factorial randomized block design with ten treatments including T₁ = Control, T₂ =15 Kg S ha⁻¹, T₃= 30 Kg S ha⁻¹, T₄= 45 Kg S ha⁻¹, T₅ = 60 Kg S ha⁻¹, T₆ = FYM 5tha⁻¹, T₇= 15 Kg S ha⁻¹+ FYM 5tha¹, T₈= 30 Kg S ha⁻¹ + FYM 5 tha⁻¹, T₉= 45 Kg S + FYM 5t ha⁻¹, T₁₀= 60 Kg S ha⁻¹ + FYM 5tha⁻¹. The results indicated that yield of seed and straw as well as oil content increased significantly with enhancing sulphur up to highest level of 60 kg Sha⁻¹. Application of 15, 30 45, 60 kg Sha⁻¹ increased the seed yield over the control by 13.73, 14.75, 17.08 and 17.53 qha⁻¹ in seed and 36.14, 37.51, 43.12 and 44.07 qha⁻¹ in straw, respectively. While, the difference between 45 and 60 kg S/ha was found at par. Application of 60 kg Sha⁻¹ significantly increased the N, P, K and S uptake of seed and straw. The highest oil content (40.58%) was observed 60 kg Sha⁻¹. There was no significant effect found through the interaction between sulphur and FYM levels on yield, uptake and oil content of mustard. In respect of quality, integration of sulphur with farmyard manure exhibited better improvement in content of protein, over either sulphur or farmyard manure alone.
