Generalmente los pozos petroleros se perforan con el método rotatorio. En este tipo de perforación, una torre sostiene la cadena de perforación, formada por una serie de tubos acoplados. La cadena se hace girar uniéndola al banco giratorio situado en el suelo de la torre. La roca se lleva a la superficie por un sistema continuo de fluido circulante impulsado por una bomba, luego de alcanzar la profundidad requerida “target geológico” se cañonean las arenas de interés, se hacen las pruebas de producción y se determina si basado en la energía del yacimiento el pozo debe ser por flujo natural y/o en su defecto se requiere sistema de levantamiento artificial, por bombeo electro sumergible, bombeo por cavidades progresivas y en última instancia bombeo mecánico para hacer el completamiento respectivo y colocar el producción el pozo. A medida que se extrae el fluido del yacimiento, la presión y caudal del mismo va disminuyendo poco a poco, así como la cantidad de gas disuelto, ocasionado por la depletacion del yacimiento. La variabilidad del pozo es analizada por el área de yacimientos y control de producción para identificar si el sistema de levantamiento por flujo natural y artificial es el más adecuado y a partir del análisis y optimización y la relación beneficio costo se hace la migración al mejor sistema de bombeo. Cuando la producción del pozo se acerca a su límite económico es posible que sólo se haya extraído una fracción del crudo del reservorio. Por ello, se han desarrollado sistemas de bombeo para optimizar la producción. Con estos sistemas de levantamiento artificial y tecnologías en subsuelo, se ha aumentado el factor de recobro de crudo hasta alcanzar una media global del 33% del petróleo presente. Finalmente, los niveles de fluido (corte de agua aumenta significativamente) y el porcentaje de crudo disminuye ostensiblemente haciendo que los costos de levantarlo a superficie sean muy altos; es decir, que los costos por OPEX (el costo de funcionamiento del pozo) es mayor que los ingresos que pueden obtenerse por la venta del crudo (una vez descontados los gastos de explotación, impuestos, seguros y rendimientos del capital). Esto significa que se ha alcanzado el límite económico del pozo, por lo que se abandona su explotación.
