Strategies for the alleviation of rural poverty in Latin American and the Caribbean. Smallholders and structural change in the Brazilian economy: opportunities in rural poverty alleviation

This is the third study planned by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in collaboration with IICA, with the goal of defining strategies for alleviating rural poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean. This studies is designed to broaden understanding of the generation and persistance of rural poverty in the region, and of how political and macroeconomic contexts directly affect the rural poor. The series also present examples of policies and strategies designed to ameliorate factors causing poverty, to tap the productive potential of the rural poor, and to promote the greatest possible participation in the benefits of a project by the poorest stratum of the rural population. The table of contents is: The economic and political context of agrarian transformation; the position of the small-scale producer in the agricultural sector; smallholdings and rural poverty; smallholder agriculture in the northeast, smallholders and the rural poor in national development; towards and IFAD strategy in Brazil, and two annexes on rural poverty and production relations and agricultural credit.

Este es el tercer estudio planificado por el Fondo Internacional de Desarrollo Agrícola (FIDA) en colaboración con el IICA, con el objetivo de definir estrategias para aliviar la pobreza rural en América Latina y el Caribe. Este estudio está diseñado para ampliar la comprensión de la generación y persistencia de la pobreza rural en la región, y de cómo los contextos políticos y macroeconómicos afectan directamente a la población rural pobre. La serie también presenta ejemplos de políticas y estrategias diseñadas para mejorar los factores que causan la pobreza, aprovechar el potencial productivo de la población rural pobre y promover la mayor participación posible en los beneficios de un proyecto por parte del estrato más pobre de la población rural. El índice es: El contexto económico y político de la transformación agraria; la posición del pequeño productor en el sector agrícola; minifundios y pobreza rural; la agricultura en pequeña escala en el noreste, los pequeños agricultores y los pobres de las zonas rurales en el desarrollo nacional; hacia una estrategia del FIDA en Brasil, y dos anexos sobre pobreza rural y relaciones de producción y crédito agrícola.
