Sumatra Bioscience is developing tenera breeding programmes to increase genetic diversity and to introgress new genes into commercial material and to cross breeding materials with complimentary traits. These programmes will generate future dura and pisifera parental lines for progeny testing, potential cloning to produce semi-clonal or clonal seed and/or teneras for selfing. Crosses have been made between Binga, Ekona, and La Me breeding materials and introgressed with AVROS commercial material. Field trials were established and recorded to evaluate yield performance, vegetative growth and bunch characters. The Binga material was received as Combined Breeding Programme 10 (CBP 10)- a high efficiency programme with less vegetatively vigorous progenies. lntrogressing selected Binga progenies with AVROS material achieved increases in oil and kernel yields per hectare. Ekona x AVROS progenies gave moderate FFB yield with high oil extraction rates. La Me breeding material was characterized by high bunch number with moderate trunk height. The performance of these different breeding materials is reported and strategies are proposed to continue to make breeding progress from these materials.
