Distribución del fitoplancton en el Estrecho Bransfield, Bahía Chile y Paso Drake, durante el verano austral 1998 (Antártida)

El principal objetivo fue de conocer la disponibilidad de la reserva alimenticia (fitoplancton), como un factor que puede influenciar la distribución y abundancia del krill antártico, registrados durante la VII Expedición Ecuatoriana a la Antártida en enero/1998 en el B/I ORION (INOCAR). La biomasa fitoplanctónica en el Estrecho Bransfield, registró altas concentraciones hacia el sur oeste del estrecho dominado principalmente por Cryptomonas spp. entre 1000.000 a 2200.000 cel/l, las menores concentraciones se registraron hacia las Islas Shetland del Sur entre 575.000 a 693.000 cel/l. compuestas principalmente por las diatomeas, Nitzschia delicatissima, N. longissima, Thalassiosira spp., y el Dinoflagelado gymnodinium spp., los cuales se presentaron distribuidos en la columna de los 100 m, con una ligera dominancia a los 20 m de profundidad. El componente cualitativo del fitoplancton en net de 50 micras en el Estrecho Bransfied (Febrero/1998), estuvo compuesto exclusivamente por Corethron criophilum distribuidos a nivel superficial entre 15.300-1455.000 org/m3. y subsuperficial entre 3.000-564.000 org/m3: Los Dinoflagelados se encontraron distribuidos (0m) hacia al oeste del Estrecho Bransfield en mínimas concentraciones con Ceratium tripos, C. furca, C. gibberum, C. kofoid, C. candelabrum. En Bahía Chile situada al noreste de la Isla Greenwich, en todas las estaciones de red (50μ) se registró la presencia de C. criophilum, pero las mayores concentraciones (225.000-264.000 org/m3) se localizaron en la entrada de la bahía, mientras que en la parte interna disminuyó su concentración, además esta especies presentó cromatóforos más desarrollados en relación a las encontradas en Estrecho Bransfield. En el Paso Drake, las mayores concentraciones del fitoplancton (cel/l) se localizaron en cercanías de las Islas Shetland del Sur y en las aproximidades del extremo sur del continente americano, en la sección intermedia se registraron las menores concentraciones celulares. La presencia de Nitzchia delicatissima, Nitzchia longissima, Thalassiosira sppp., Cryptomonas spp., Gymnodinium spp., en el Paso Drake, están influenciando en la parte interna del Estrecho Bransfield. Los deshielos registrados en las Islas Shetland del Sur y Península Antártica durante el verano austral de 1998, debido a los cambios climáticos como consecuencia del evento El Niño 1997-98, las especies fitoplanctónicas reportadas en este artículo, podrían ver excelentes indicadoras de las anomalías antes referidas, las mismas que son discutidas.

The principal objective was to know the availability of phytoplankton that could influence of the distribution and abundance of the Antarctica krill, registered during the VII Ecuadorian Expedition to the Antarctica in january/1998 of aboard the B/I ORION (INOCAR). The phytoplankton biomass, registered high concentrations in the south west of the Bransfield Strait. The dominance was represented principally bt Cryptomonas spp., between 1000.000 a 220.000 cel/l, the less concentration is registered around the south Islands between 575.000 a 693.000 cel/l compounds mainly for diatoms: Nitzchia delicatissima, Nitzchia longissima, Thalassiosira spp., and the Dinoflagellate: Gymnodinium spp., which are distribute in the water column of the 100 m, with a light domination to the 20 m of depth. The qualitative component of the phytoplankton in 50μ mesh in the Bransfield Strait (February/1998), was composed exclusivity for corethron criophlum distributed to surface level between 15300-1455.000 org/m3 and subsurface between 3.000-564.000 org/m: the Dinoflagellates: Ceratium tripos, C. furca, C. gibberum, C. kofoid, C. candelabrum are recorded in less concentrations (0m) placed toward the west of the Bransfield Strait. In Chile Bay situated to the northeast of the Greenwich Island, in each station, in sample of 50μ mesh net, is register the presence of C. criophilum, witch main concentrations (225.000-264.000 org/m3) located in the entrance of the bay: while in the internal part decrease it concentration, moreover this specie present cromatophore more development than the species found in Bransfield Strait. In Drake Passage, the majors concentrations of the phytoplankton (cell/l) are located in proximity of the south extreme of the American continent, in the intermediate section are registered the minors cells concentrations. The presence of Nitzchia delicatissima, Nitzchia longgisima, Thalassiosira spp., Criptomonas spp., Gymnodinium spp., in the Drake Passage, are influenced in the inner of Bransfield Strait. The watching melting ice on Shetland Island and Antarctic Peninsula during the summer 1998, by the meteorological changes as the El Niño event 1997-98 (Zambrano y Garcés, 1998), the phytoplankton species showed in this text (water samples and net 50μ), they can be excellent indicators of this anomalous conditions.
