Microalgae can attach to various substrates in aquatic environments and cause biofouling; however, research on domestic ship hulls is not widely known. In the present study, we report for the first time ship hull fouling microalgae from a research vessel Jangmok No.1. We collected samples from the ship hulls and surface seawaters on September 2, 2021, and analyzed microalgal flora. We identified 11 benthic diatoms such as Achnanthes brevipes, Licmophora sp., Synedra sp. from the hull surface. They were mostly less than 20 μm in size. In contrast, we detected 7 planktonic diatoms and 4 dinoflagellates from water column. The species composition did not match those of the hull attached algae. These results suggest that the hull biofouling is mainly caused by diatoms, which may differ to those in water column.
