Laboratory assessment of plant crude extracts against Pomacea maculata

Pomacea maculate is a freshwater gastropod that significantly reduces rice productivity worldwide, particularly in Asian countries. Botanical molluscicide development is one of the great interests in pest management to avoid harmful environmental effects caused by synthetic molluscicides. Thus study is conducted to evaluate the molluscicidal effect and feeding deterrent activity from selected leave plant materials; Acacia mangium, Psidium guajava, Swietenia mahagoni, Anacardium occidentale, Artocarpus heterophyllus and Turnera ulmifolia. Crude plant extracts were prepared from plant powders using methanol and five concentrations of each crude (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500ppm) were evaluated against P. maculata using niclosamide as positive control. Under laboratory conditions, Amangium and P.guajava leaf extract caused 100% mortality of the P. maculata at 500 ppm after 24h of exposure. From probit analysis, LC50 and LC90 after 72 h exposure showed P. guajava extract the lowest at 221.84 and 410.80 ppm, respectively. All crude extracts showed no deterrent activity (FDI) to P. maculata at all concentration levels and significant differences (pO.05) compared to niclosamide. This study showed the crude methanolic extracts of P. guajava leave exhibited promising molluscicidal activities against adult P. maculata.
