Morpho-physiological and nutritional components of adlay (Coix Lacryma-Jabi L.) intercropped with mangosteen across ratooning at Kabacan, Cotabato [Philippines]

Adlay (Coix lacryma jobi-L.) is a promising crop which is being considered as alternative staple food in the country due to its ease in cultivation and highly nutritious grains. This study was conducted to identify the adlay variety that has best agronomic characters and high nutritional value when intercropped with mangosteen and subjected to ratooning. Field yield trials of 5 adlay varieties, that are commonly grown in Mindanao, were done from July to December 2021 (main crop) and January to June 2022 (ratoon crop). The trials were carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. Differences among the five varieties were found significant in the main crop as well as the ratoon crop. Number of vegetative tillers was higher in ratoon crop with Gulian having the highest number of tillers. Days to flowering was shorter in ratoon with an average of 74.15 days compared to 95.18 days in main crop. Main crop had lower number of unfilled grains with an average of 8.39 compared to 21.10 in ratoon crop wherein Pulot had the lowest unfilled grains under ratoon crop. The average 1000 seed weight of the five varieties in main crop which is 89 80 g was not at par with the ratoon crop at 89.70 g, Ginampay was the highest main and ratoon crop yielder with 1,576 kg/ha and 482 kg/ha, respectively. In main crop, Pulot and Kiboa grains had the highest total carbohydrate with 84.29% and 84.48%, respectively and Tapol grains with highest total sugar content at 2.76%. Gulian had the highest fat content (2.5%) and fiber content (4.14%) while Kiboa had the highest protein content (13.56%) in ratoon crop. Ginampay showed the highest yield across ratoon. Generally, the yield of the five varieties were lower in the ratoon crop.
