Effect of Azolla compost as a growing media for the production of baby greens lettucce (Lactuca sativa L.)

Peat moss is popular in the horticulture industry as it serves as a growing medium for vegetable production. However, its application requires a large quantity, leading to a substantial budget for farmers. With the introduction of Azolla compost as a growing medium, the compost is easy to produce, resulting in a lower cost compared to buying peat moss. An experiment was conducted at Field 15, Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia, to study the effect of Azolla compost as a growing media on the growth performance of baby greens lettuce (Lactuca sativa L). A total of five media treatment combinations (1) 100% Azolla compost, (2) 50% Azolla Compost: 40% cocopeat: 10% chicken dung, (3) 100% peat moss (control), (4) 50% peat moss: 40% cocopeat: 10% chicken dung, and (5) 90% cocopeat l0% chicken dung mixture were tested. The experiment was arranged in the RCBD with three replications. The characterizations of the growing media recorded were pH value, EC value, CEC value, and the percentage of total macronutrient content (N, P, K, Ca and Mg). For plant growth performance, parameters were plant height, leaf diameter, number of leaves, leaf fresh and dry weight, root length, and root fresh and dry weight. Fifty per cent of Azolla compost with 40% cocopeat and 10% chicken dung mixtures and 50% peat moss with 40% cocopeat and 10% chicken dung shows better plant growth characteristics, with the increase in plant height, number of leaves, leaf diameter, and leaves fresh and dry weight. An overall analysis has indicated better plant growth and development for the 50% Azolla compost with 40% cocopeat and l0% chicken dung mixtures.
