Supply and value chair of Citronella grass var. Ceylon (Cymbopogon nardus [L.] Rendle) in Labo, Camarines Norte, Philippines
2023
Balaguer, A.N.
The supply and value chain of two product lines of citronella grass var. Ceylon (Cymbopogon nardus [L.] Rendle) in Labo, Camarines Norte, citronella leaf production and citronella essential oil extraction, were determined using supply and value chain analysis in 2015. The value addition, product improvement, and product diversification of citronella oil and its by-products were determined. The actual citronella oil production at the Kooperatiba ng Maliliit na Magniniyog ng Barangay Kanapawan is 116 L/mo. On a hectare basis, a leaf producer can earn PHP 52,800.00 per cropping cycle of 4 mo. For every kilogram of fresh citronella leaves purchased by the cooperative at PHP 5.00, a leaf producer has a net value gain of PHP 2.64, or 91.99%. The net value gained for the cooperative as an essential oil extractor is PHP 0.26, or 8.89%. The cooperative members attend trade fairs which serve as avenue to maintain market ties and linkages with private and business sectors for additional buyers and to leverage citronella and mother value added products such as hand and body lotion, bath soap, dishwashing liquid soap, scented candles, and insect repellent spray. Areas for improvement in the citronella supply and value chain include the utilization of a larger capacity boiler for distilling essential oil, the utilization of spent citronella leaves into mosquito coils, the production of hand-made paper to minimize waste material during the distillation process, and a display center showcasing their value-added products.
