Factores de riesgo asociados a la prevalencia de Neosporosis Bovina en el municipio Bolívar del estado Yaracuy, Venezuela | Risk factors associated with the prevalence of Bovine Neosporosis in the Bolivar municipality of Yaracuy state, Venezuela

Se realizó un estudio transversal para determinar la prevalencia de infección con Neospora caninum y su asociación a factores de riesgo en explotaciones bovinas ubicadas en el municipio Bolívar del estado Yaracuy. Se evaluaron 408 vacas y 142 novillas de 51 fincas seleccionadas aleatoriamente para determinar la presencia de anticuerpos contra N. caninum utilizando la técnica de ELISA indirecto. Mediante la odds ratio (OR), se evaluó la asociación de la prevalencia del parásito con factores de riesgo intrínsecos y extrínsecos a los animales. Se obtuvo una prevalencia por animal de 17,09% y una frecuencia de infección por fincas de 74,51%. La prevalencia se encontró asociada significativamente (P < 0,05), a la aptitud lechera (OR = 3,01), el patrón racial Bos taurus (OR = 4,29), el hecho de que el animal naciera en la propia finca (OR = 2,09), el consumo de alimento balanceado comercial (OR = 1,82) y la densidad mayor a 3 bovinos/Ha (OR = 1,91). Asimismo, fue hallada una asociación negativa con el patrón racial B. indicus (OR = 0,48) y el tamaño del rebaño mayor a 1.000 animales (OR = 0,33). No fue encontrada asociación significativa (P > 0,05), con el grupo etario, el número de partos, la presencia de perros y el origen del agua de bebida. Los resultados dan indicios de que en la región estudiada predomina la forma de transmisión vertical de N. caninum y que la prevalencia del parásito está influenciada por el sistema de producción.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of infection with Neospora caninum and its association with risk factors in cattle farms located in the Bolivar municipality of Yaracuy State. A total of 408 cows and 142 heifers were evaluated from 51 farms randomly selected to determine the presence of antibodies against N. caninum using the indirect ELISA technique. By odds ratio (OR) was assessed the association of parasite prevalence with risk factors intrinsic and extrinsic to the animals. There was obtained a prevalence of 17,09% for animal and an infection rate of 74,51% for farm. The prevalence was significantly associated (P <0,05) with aptitude for milk production (OR = 3,01), the racial pattern Bos taurus (OR = 4,29), the fact that the animal was born on-farm (OR = 2,09), consumption of balanced commercial feed (OR = 1,82) and density greater than 3 cattle / ha (OR = 1,91). It was also found a negative association with the racial pattern B. indicus (OR = 0,48) and the size of the herd increased to 1.000 animals (OR = 0,33). No significant association was found (P> 0,05) with age group, the number of births, the presence of dogs and the source of drinking water. The findings give evidence that the region studied predominant form of vertical transmission of N. caninum, and that the prevalence of the parasite is influenced by the production system.
