The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), in partnership with the Department of Education Division of Palawan (DepEd Palawan), is implementing the School-plus-Home Gardens cum Biodiversity Enhancement Enterprise (SHGBEE) in Busuanga Island, Palawan [Philippines]. Busuanga is one of the numerous islands in the Philippines which is home to a rich biodiversity and known for its tourist destinations. Food and nutrition security remain to be a problem among the locals. Malnutrition is prevalent among school children and soils are unproductive. The project aimed to improve the nutrition and health of school children and their families by increasing production of locally adapted vegetables through school gardening and consequently contribute to the community's food and nutrition security as well as to its biodiversity enhancement. School gardening is considered as one of the solutions to resolve malnourishment among school children and instill in them the importance and contribution of vegetable gardening activities to food and nutrition security, poverty alleviation, and sustainable development. Through this project, the issues related to school gardening would be addressed by providing technical assistance on the aspects of organic crop and vegetable production, improving soil productivity through organic soil amendments and fertilizers, and an integrated pest management (|PM) strategy through natural farm input production and utilization that would complement the Department of Education's (DepEd) programs on Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (School Vegetable Garden) and School-based Feeding Program (SBFP), and the local government units' (LGU) intention to promote vegetable production and consumption through its Halina't Magtanim ng Prutas at Gulay sa Barangay (Let's Plant Fruits and Vegetable in The Village) Program.
