Development of an automated feed dispensing machine for Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
2024
Hernandez, G.N.
This study was aimed to develop an automated feed dispensing machine for Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758). The machine is programmed to dispense feeds at specific time intervals considering the feeding habits and daily feed requirements of Tilapia. The machine is operated by a stepper motor located beneath the pellet hopper, and the feeds were discharged into the target area through an air blower. Results showed that the optimal hopper capacities ranged from 3.5 to 7 kg, resulting in an average discharge rate of 4.72 to 4.74 kg/min of fish feeds. The average discharge rate at 150 rpm was 4.81 kg/min. A linear relationship was found between the feed roller speed and the amount of feed discharge. With the highest R sq value, the 150-rpm speed setting for the feed roller was chosen for the entire study. The obtained lowest coefficient value was 2.396 (at dial No.7) and the blower setting speeds were directly proportional to the average SEC of 0.00252, 0.00280, and 0.00304 W-hr/g at air velocity of 18, 20, and 23 m/s, respectively. The study will contribute to the broader field of aquaculture research by exploring the impact of automatic fish feeders on the growth performance of Tilapia, providing valuable insights into their feeding habits and enhancing productivity. The findings of this study are expected to benefit tilapia farmers, aquaculture researchers, and policymakers involved in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
