Efectos de la fecha de siembra, disponibilidad hídrica y densidad de siembra sobre la determinación del rendimiento y la calidad de maíz Pisingallo (Zea mays L. var. everta)

El maíz pisingallo (Zea mays L. var. everta) es un producto diferenciado con valor agregado y constituye una alternativa válida de diversificación en los sistemas de producción agrícola donde Argentina posee un rol preponderante en el comercio mundial dado el volumen de producción anual y sus estándares de calidad. Sin embargo, es escasa la información sobre la incidencia de estrategias de manejo y su impacto sobre el rendimiento y calidad industrial. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar en condiciones de campo el impacto de la disponibilidad hídrica (riego y secano; NHR y NHS, respectivamente), cuatro fechas de siembra (FS), 22/09, 17/10, 11/11 y 06/12 (SET, OCT, NOV y DIC, respectivamente) y dos densidades de siembra (6 y 8 pl m-2) sobre el rendimiento en granos y sus componentes numéricos, número (NG; m2) y peso individual de granos (PG) y la calidad industrial del grano en maíz pisingallo. El hibrido utilizado fue Basso 5802. El ensayo se condujo en la campaña 2011-2012 en Pergamino, provincia de Buenos Aires y los tratamientos se dispusieron bajo un diseño de parcelas sub subdivididas con tres repeticiones. La campaña agrícola evaluada se caracterizó por fuertes escenarios de estrés térmico (golpes de calor) e hídrico principalmente exacerbados durante el período crítico de fijación de granos (PC) de las FS de OCT y NOV y durante el llenado de granos (LLG) de las FS de SET y OCT. En consecuencia, el NH y la FS fueron los factores que explicaron el 81% de la varianza total del rendimiento en granos. En este sentido, el rendimiento se redujo un 45% en el NHS respecto del NHR y la FS de NOV generó los rendimiento más bajos y la de DIC, los más altos (10 tn ha-1), valor que se encuentra cercano al potencial del cultivo en la región. La interacción NH*FS detectada indicó que el NH no generó efectos sobre el rendimiento solo en la FS de DIC, aunque el NHR amortiguó el efecto de los golpes de calor durante PC y LLG de las FS de SET, OCT y NOV. La densidad de siembra de 8 pl m-2 incrementó el rendimiento un 10% respecto de la de 6 pl m-2. Las variaciones del rendimiento fueron explicadas por el NG (r2= 93%, p<0,0001) y en menor medida por el PG (r2= 19%; p<0,002). El atraso de la fecha de siembra incrementó el PG y la proporción de granos retenidos en una zaranda con orificios de 6 mm (SS 6 mm) y redujo la capacidad de expansión (VEXP) en el popeado y calibre de los granos (K10). Debido a la importancia del PG en la determinación del VEXP y K10, se encontró que VEXP, presentó un PG y SS 6 mm óptimo por encima del cual VEXP disminuye. En consecuencia, se detectó una asociación negativa entre VEXP y rendimiento por encima de los 3952 kg ha-1, que en general, fue promovida por menores VEXP registrados en la FS de NOV y DIC en ambos NH. Por consiguiente, aquellos factores de manejo agronómico que permitan maximizar el PG siempre tenderán a generar menor VEXP. No obstante, los menores VEXP alcanzados en la FS de DIC estuvieron por encima de los límites establecidos por el mercado de esta especialidad. De esta manera, FS tardías de DIC permiten maximizar el rendimiento en granos con parámetros de calidad normales para la industria. Por último, la probabilidad de que los escenarios climáticos adversos (golpes de calor) registrados en la campaña 2011-2012 ocurran fue baja (3 a 5% de 72 años). No obstante, los resultados de este estudio resultan de importancia para regiones extra pampeanas ya que se prevé que tales escenarios aumenten en frecuencia en el futuro por efectos del cambio climático global y para regiones del mundo donde la probabilidad de estreses térmicos e hídricos es frecuente.

Popcorn maize (Zea mays L. var. everta) is a specialty with added value and constitutes a valid diversification alternative in agricultural production systems where Argentina has a preponderant role in world trade given the volume of annual production and its quality standards. However, there is little information on the incidence of management strategies and their impact on grain yield and industrial quality parameters. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the impact of water availability (irrigation and rainfed, NHR and NHS, respectively) in field conditions, four sowing dates, 22/09, 17/10, 11/11 and 06/12 (SET, OCT, NOV, and DIC, respectively) and two plant densities (6 and 8 pl m-2) on the grain yield and their numerical components, number (NG; m2) and individual grain weight (PG) and the grain quality of the Popcorn maize. The experiment was conducted during the 2011-2012 season at Pergamino (33º56’S y 60º34’O), province of Buenos Aires and the treatments were distributed under a split-split-plot design with three replications. The 2011-2012 season was characterized by strong scenarios of heat stress (days with temperatures >35 °C) and water stress mainly exacerbated during the critical period of grain determination (PC) of the FS of OCT and NOV and during the effective grain filling (LLG) of the FS of SET and OCT. Consequently, NH and FS were the factors that explained 81% of the total variance of grain yield. In this sense, yield was reduced by 45% in the NHS with respect to NHR and the FS of NOV generated the lowest yields and the DIC, the highest (10 tn ha-1), value that is close to the potential of the crop in the region. The NH*FS interaction detected indicated that NH did not generate effects on yield only in the FS of DIC, although the NHR reduced the effect of heat stress during PC and LLG of the FS of SET, OCT and NOV. Plant density of 8 pl m-2 increased yield by 10% compared to 6 pl m-2. The variations of the yield were explained by the NG (r2 = 93%, p<0,0001) and to a lesser extent by the PG (r2 = 19%; p<0,002). The delay of the sowing date increased the PG and the proportion of grains retained in a sieve with holes of 6 mm; SS 6 mm) but reduced the popping volume (VEXP) and caliber of the grains (K10). Due to the importance of PG in the determination of VEXP and K10, it was found that VEXP presented an optimal PG and SS 6 mm above which VEXP decreases. Consequently, a negative association between VEXP and yield above 3952 kg ha-1 was detected, which was generally promoted by lower VEXP recorded in the FS of NOV and DIC in both NH. Therefore, those factors of agronomic management that allow maximize the PG will always tend to generate lower VEXP. However, the low VEXP in the FS of DIC was above the threshold established by the market of this specialty. Hence, late sowing of DIC allows maximizing the grain yield with optimum grain quality. Although the probability that the climatic constraint scenarios of the 2011-2012 season occur are low (3 to 5% of 72 year climate records), our result is of the importance for temperate Rolling Pampas due to those scenarios are expected to increase in frequency in the future due to the effects of global climate change and for regions of the world where the probability of heat and water stresses are actually frequent.
