Intemperismo acelerado em madeira termorretificada em óleo | Accelerated weathering on oil heat treated wood

The use of oil heat treatment aims at incrementing the technological properties of wood with use indication for external environments. Therefore, the current study had, as its objective, the evaluation of accelerated weathering on the oil heat treated woods of Pinus elliottii and Eucalyptus grandis. To that end, specimens were manufactured from five trees of each species. The heat treatment was conducted in a laboratory oil bath at 150º, 180º and 210º for four hours and the weathering was conducted in an accelerated weathering chamber for 20, 40 and 60 cycles of twelve hours, the control samples were stored in an air-conditioned chamber (20º and 65% RH). Were conducted: mechanical test (static bending), physical tests (basic specific mass, equilibrium moisture content, swelling and volumetric variation) and surface test (colorimetric testing). The statistical analysis was carried in a factorial arrangement 4x4, with four levels on each factor (temperature and time), in case of interaction a regression analysis was conducted. The main results demonstrate that the accelerated weathering did not affect the mechanical properties, however the heat treatment caused a reduction of resistance on Eucalyptus grandis in accordance with the temperature increase. The physical properties were enhanced with heat treatment, and broadly had little influence of the exposition time. The specific mass increased according to the oil absorption by the wood. The equilibrium moisture content decreased with the temperature rise and presented larger variations on the initial cycles of accelerated weathering, tending to stabilise. Swelling and volumetric variation were improved by the heat treatment and presented little influence of the accelerated weathering. Wood colouration was altered by heat treatment and also by accelerated weathering. The rise in temperature made the woods darker, demonstrated by the reduction parameter L* and the longer exposition time made the wood opaquer and greyish – increased L* and reduced a* and or b*. Thus, the oil heat treatment altered, in a pronounced way, the technological properties of the studied woods and was efficient in its conservation against the action of weathering. Therefore, the use of oil heat treated wood (preferably with a temperature of 180ºC) is recommended for external and internal environments.

O uso de tratamento de termorretificação em óleo visam incrementar as propriedades tecnológicas da madeira com indicação de uso em ambientes externos. Portanto, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o intemperismo acelerado na madeira de Pinus elliottii e Eucalyptus grandis termorretificada em óleo. Para tal, foram confeccionados corpos de prova, a partir de cinco árvores de cada espécie. A termorretificação foi realizada em banho de óleo laboratorial a 150°C, 180°C e 210°C por 4 horas e o intemperismo foi conduzido câmara de intemperismo acelerado por 20, 40 e 60 ciclos de 12 horas, as amostras controle foram acondicionadas em câmara climatizada (20°C e 65% UR). Foram realizados ensaios mecânico (flexão estática), físicos (massa específica básica, teor de umidade de equilíbrio, inchamento e variação volumétrica) e de superfície (colorimetria). A análise estatística foi realizada em arranjo fatorial 4x4, com quatro níveis em cada fator (temperatura e tempo), em caso de interação foi realizada análise de regressão. Os principais resultados mostram que o intemperismo acelerado não afetou as propriedades mecânicas, entretanto a termorretificação causou reduções da resistência em Eucalyptus grandis conforme o aumento da temperatura. As propriedades físicas foram incrementadas com a termorretificação e de maneira geral tiveram pouca influência do tempo de exposição. A massa específica aumentou em função da absorção de óleo pela madeira. O teor de umidade de equilíbrio decresceu com o aumento da temperatura e apresentou maiores variações nos ciclos iniciais de intemperismo, com tendência de estabilização. O inchamento e a variação volumétrica foram aprimorados pela termorretificação e apresentaram pouca influência do intemperismo acelerado. A coloração da madeira foi alterada tanto pela termorretificação quanto pelo intemperismo acelerado. O aumento da temperatura tornou a madeira mais escura, evidenciado pela redução do parâmetro L* e o maior tempo de exposição tornou a madeira mais opaca e acinzentada – aumento do L* e redução do a* e/ou b*. Portanto, a termorretificação em óleo alterou de forma mais pronunciada as propriedades tecnológicas das madeiras estudadas e foi eficiente na sua manutenção frente a ação do intemperismo. Dessa forma, recomenda-se o uso de madeira termorretificada em óleo (preferencialmente com temperatura de 180°C) em ambientes externos e internos.
