Las hormigas como bioindicadores de calidad ambiental en el marco de la gestión de los recursos naturales en el Sur de la Península Ibérica | Ants as bioindicators of environmental quality in the framework of the management of natural resources in the South of the Iberian Peninsula

La estimación de la diversidad ecológica de un ecosistema y la realización de inventarios de fauna son de las primeras tareas que se han de realizar a la hora de ejecutar proyectos de conservación y restauración de biodiversidad. En la actualidad, se buscan medios que simplifiquen este trabajo, como es el caso del uso de organismos bioindicadores y/o grupos subrogados. Los organismos bioindicadores son grupos o especies que, por su biología (fidelidad ecológica, importancia funcional en los ecosistemas) y su respuesta rápida, predecible y lineal a las perturbaciones, independientemente de su origen (humano o natural), reflejan el estado general de un ecosistema. En ocasiones, estos organismos pueden ser considerados como subrogados; es decir, son grupos cuya diversidad es indicativa de la de otros (tanto grupos equivalentes, ej. familia vs. familia, como grupos superiores, ej. familia vs. clase). En esta tesis, se plantea el estudio de las hormigas (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) como grupo subrogado de otros artrópodos y, como organismos bioindicadores en algunos ecosistemas de relevancia comprobada del sur de la península ibérica, como son las dehesas y los bosques de ribera. Las dehesas son ecosistemas sabanoides que consisten en pastizales arbolados, generalmente con pies del género Quercus y, especialmente, de la especie Quercus ilex subsp. ballota. Estos ecosistemas son de vital importancia ya que, por un lado, sustentan la economía de muchas zonas de Andalucía, y por otro, porque se consideran zonas de especial interés ambiental al ser refugios de biodiversidad. En la actualidad estos ecosistemas vienen atravesando una profunda crisis debido a la intensificación de la gestión en las fincas, al cambio climático y a la crisis sanitaria producida por distintas enfermedades que afectan al arbolado. En esta tesis realizamos muestreos de los ensamblajes de hormigas y otros artrópodos mediante trampas de caída a lo largo de toda Sierra Morena, diferenciando entre zonas de adehesada y otras zonas de las fincas con especies vegetales y con características microclimáticas distintas. Estos son los llamados small natural features (SNFs) y en este estudio estaban compuestos por pequeños bosques de ribera o zonas arboladas junto a charcas, zonas de matorral y muros de piedra. Pudimos comprobar que la diversidad de hormigas estaba directamente relacionada con la diversidad de otros grupos de artrópodos epigeos, por lo que constituyen un excelente grupo subrogado. Y, además, comprobamos que los ensamblajes de hormigas se veían afectados de manera significativa por las temperaturas medias anuales, en contraste con otros factores como la altitud, la pluviometría o la carga ganadera, que no mostraban efectos claros de manera general. Se estudió también la influencia del entorno inmediato, o microentorno, de las trampas sobre la composición local de las muestras de hormigas, encontrando en la dehesa 3 entornos distintos en función de los grupos de especies: las zonas arboladas, pastizales y de matorral. En este contexto, los SNFs que tienen microhábitats particulares y diferenciados al resto de la dehesa actuaban como refugios de especies de hormigas que no se encontraban en las zonas de dehesa. Por este motivo, tanto la conservación como la creación de nuevas áreas similares puede ser uno de los objetivos principales, junto con la regeneración del arbolado, para conservar y recuperar la diversidad ecológica de hormigas y del resto de grupos en las dehesas. Por otro lado, se estudiaron bosques de ribera del río Guadalquivir. En general, los bosques de ribera son ecosistemas lineales de vital importancia, que no sólo constituyen ecotonos entre los ecosistemas fluviales y terrestres, sino que, además son hábitats que, con frecuencia, poseen una diversa comunidad de plantas y fauna, y a su vez, sirven de refugio y medio de dispersión de especies a otras zonas de estructura similar o zonas más humanizadas. Existen en la actualidad algunos índices que evalúan la estructura de los cauces, entorno, estructura vegetal y grado de presencia humana para estimar el nivel de conservación de estos hábitats. Por ello, quisimos comparar índices como el de calidad de bosques de ribera (QBR) u otros como la distancia a zonas humanizadas, con un grupo de organismos bioindicadores reconocidos como son las hormigas. Para ello se muestrearon distintos sotos del río Guadalquivir, desde su nacimiento en Cazorla (Jaén) hasta Almodóvar del Río (Córdoba). Se encontró que la diversidad y estructura de las hormigas (número de especies, Shannon y Equitatividad) estaba muy correlacionada con el índice QBR y las distancias a núcleos humanos. Además se encontraron especies como Temnothorax pardoi, Temnothorax recedens y Camponotus lateralis que se encontraban en aquellos sotos con índices QBR altos y que podrían indicar buen estado de conservación. En el lado contrario, Tetramorium semilaeve se encuentra presente en aquellos sotos en los que el índice QBR es bajo. Por último, se estudiaron diferentes variables de las trampas de caída, que pueden afectar a los resultados de los trabajos con hormigas. Se planteó dicho estudio ya que uno de los sistemas de muestreo más usados en la realización de investigaciones con artrópodos epigeos es mediante este tipo de trampas. Este es un sistema versátil, extendido por su simpleza y bajo coste y eficaz a la hora de capturar especies activas, de manera independiente de los ritmos de actividad diarios. En general son unos recipientes, con forma de vaso, que se entierran a ras de suelo con algún conservante o sustancia que impida el escape de los individuos capturados. Se pueden utilizar recipientes con características muy distintas (diámetro, material, forma), y diferentes metodologías: uso de cebos, de sustancias para disminuir el escape, distintas formas de disposición, accesorios como tapas o embudos, o la manera de disponerlas en el espacio (transectos, cuadrículas…). Todo esto provoca distintos efectos o sesgos que alteran la tasa de captura de las especies presentes, lo que hace difícil la comparación entre trabajos realizados con distintas trampas y/o metodología. En esta tesis, realizamos una revisión de algunas variables que ya están estudiadas, pero de las que se encontraron contradicciones en la bibliografía. Y, por último, profundizamos en el conocimiento de aquellas que no están claras para el caso de las hormigas. A la hora de disponer la trampa en el suelo, en general, se excava para colocarla a ras de suelo y posteriormente se rellena el hueco y se nivela. Esta manipulación genera una alteración de la estructura del suelo que en grupos como colémbolos, arañas y escarabajos se ha demostrado que produce un aumento temporal de la tasa de captura. A esto se le denomina efecto digging-in. En esta tesis estudiamos cómo afecta el tipo de hábitat de la zona de muestreo y cuánto tiempo perdura. En cuanto al hábitat, se estudiaron las diferencias entre zonas abiertas o pastizal y zonas cerradas (cobertura de árboles). Aunque existieron diferencias entre los ensamblajes y riqueza de especies debido al tipo de hábitats, no se vio una alteración general de la tasa de captura de especies ni de la composición de las muestras que pudiera deberse al efecto digging-in. Por otro lado, con respecto al tiempo de prevalencia de este efecto, se observó que en las primeras 24 horas tras la abertura de la trampa se producía un incremento de la tasa de captura general. Aunque al analizarlo por especies, les afectaba de manera distinta. Por otra parte, tras 48 horas no se observaban diferencias en la tasa de captura de especies ni en la composición de las muestras. Por tanto, en un principio, en estos ecosistemas con un tiempo de muestreo (tiempo en que las trampas de caída se mantienen abiertas capturando) de 48 horas o superiores, el efecto digging-in no supondría un sesgo para nuestros muestreos. En cuanto a factores de sesgo debidos a características de las trampas, uno de los más estudiados es el tamaño de la abertura de la boca de la trampa. Existen numerosos estudios que concluyen que, al incrementar el tamaño de la boca de la trampa de caída, se incrementa el número de especies capturadas. Sin embargo, existe un problema: estos estudios no usan trampas comparables (de iguales características) o, si lo hacen, no lo especifican en su metodología. Por otro lado, otro factor es la profundidad de la trampa de caída. Existen pocos estudios a este respecto, y los que hay descartan que haya afectación de este factor al número total de especies capturadas. En esta tesis planteamos dos estudios distintos, uno que contempla el tamaño de la boca y la profundidad a la vez, comparando 4 tipos de trampas, que por otro lado tienen igual forma, material y fabricante. Se concluyó que un mayor tamaño de la embocadura (perímetro) supone un incremento de la captura de especies. Además, este sesgo se incrementa, en cuanto a número de obreras capturadas, en aquellas especies de tamaños corporales grandes (longitud corporal superior a 4.5 mm), estableciéndose una relación directamente proporcional entre el volumen de la trampa y el número de obreras capturadas. Registramos también un cambio en la composición de las muestras de hormigas. De esta forma, trampas de distinto tamaño pueden capturar especies en diferentes proporciones. Sin embargo, en este primer estudio, a pesar de que se detectan ligeras diferencias respecto a la profundidad de las trampas, estas no llegan a ser significativas. Por ello, se planteó un segundo estudio en el que se comparaban dos trampas de igual modelo y fabricante, con el mismo tamaño de embocadura, en las que variaba la profundidad (7.3 frente a 11.6 cm). En este caso, aun confirmando lo encontrado en bibliografía de que capturan un número total de especies semejante, el número medio de especies y obreras capturadas es mayor para las trampas más profundas. En nuestro trabajo comprobamos que el incremento de las capturas (número de obreras) no es igual para todas las especies. Por ello, descartando que el tamaño de la hormiga juegue algún tipo de papel, planteamos la hipótesis de que puede deberse a diferencias en la tasa de escape como consecuencia a la capacidad de trepar de cada especie. Finalmente, planteamos un estudio que trata de averiguar cómo afecta la distancia de colocación entre dos trampas de caída a las similitudes entre la composición de hormigas capturadas de ambas muestras. Es decir, averiguar cuál es la distancia mínima entre trampas de caída para evitar la autocorrelación espacial significativa, con el fin de evitar la pseudoreplicación. Este estudio se realizó en dos pastizales mediterráneos compuestos de plantas nitrófilas, donde colocamos trampas de caída a distintas distancias. Concluimos que, a partir de una distancia de separación entre pares de trampas de 5 m, desaparece la autocorrelación entre las trampas.

Estimating the ecological diversity of an ecosystem and conducting fauna inventories are among the first tasks that should be undertaken when implementing biodiversity conservation and restoration projects. At the present time, it is important to be provided with tools to simplify this type of works, such as the use of bioindicators organisms and/or surrogate groups. Bioindicator organisms are groups or species that, due to their ecological fidelity, functional importance in the ecosystems and their quick, linear and predictable response to disturbances, regardless of their origin (human or natural), reflect the general state of an ecosystem. Sometimes these organisms can be considered as surrogates; that is, they are groups which diversity is indicative of other groups’ diversity, whether for equivalent taxa (for example family vs. family), or for superior groups (like family vs. class). In this dissertation, ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) are proposed as surrogates for other arthropods as well as bioindicator organisms in two ecosystems of recognized relevance in the south of the Iberian Peninsula: the ‘dehesas’ and the riparian forests. The ‘dehesas’ are sabanoid ecosystems, meaning vast extensions of pastures with scattered trees, usually belonging to the genus Quercus, mainly of the species Quercus ilex subsp. ballota. Not only do these ecosystems fulfill important roles in the Andalusian economy, but also they are considered areas of special environmental interest, as they act as biodiversity refuges. These ecosystems are currently undergoing a severe crisis due to the problems of the intensification of farm management, the climate change and the multiple diseases that are affecting the trees. In our study, we sampled with pitfall traps the ant assemblages and other arthropods of fifteen farms throughout the entire Sierra Morena range (Andalusia, Spain), differentiating between the ‘dehesas’ and other areas of the farms with different plant species and microclimatic characteristics; these are the so-called small natural features (SNFs), and in this study they comprised small riparian forests or wooded areas next to ponds, shrublands and stone walls. We were able to verify that the diversity of ants was directly related to the diversity of other groups of epigean arthropods, what confirms their role as an excellent surrogate group. In other respects, we found that the ant assemblages were significantly affected by the average annual temperatura in contrast to other factors such as the altitude, rainfall, or livestock rearing, which did not show clear general effects. The influence of the immediate environment, or microhábitat where the traps are set, on the local composition of the ant samples was also studied, finding 3 different habitats in the ‘dehesas’ depending on the species groupings: wooded areas, grasslands and shrublands. In this context, the SNFs –that provide different microhabitats- acted as refuges for ant species that were not found in the ‘dehesa’ areas. For this reason, together with tree regeneration, the conservation and the creation of new SNFs should be one of the main objectives to preserve and recover the ecological diversity of ants and other taxa in the dehesas. The riparian forests of the Guadalquivir River were also studied. In general, riparian forests are linear ecosystems of vital importance, that not only constitute ecotones between the river and the terrestrial ecosystems, but also they are habitats that frequently host a diverse community of plants and fauna. Furthermore, they serve as refuge and means of dispersal for species to other areas. Currently, there are some indexes that evaluate the structure of the riverbed, the environment, the plant structure and the degree of human disturbance to determine the level of conservation of these habitats. Our aim was to compare different indexes such as the quality of the Riverside forests (Qualitat del Bosc deRibera,QBR) or others like the distance to human disturbed areas, with a group of recognized bioindicator organisms, the ants. For this purpose, different groves of the Guadalquivir River were sampled, from the source in Cazorla (Jaén) to Almodóvar del Río (Córdoba). The diversity and structure of the ants (number of species, Shannon diversity index and Equitability index) were found to be highly correlated with the QBR index and distances to human built-up areas. In addition, species such as Temnothorax pardoi, Temnothorax recedens and Camponotus lateralis were found in those groves with a high QBR index, meaning a good state of conservation. By contrast, Tetramorium semilaeve is present in those groves where the QBR index is low. Finally, different variables of the pitfall traps that may affect the results of ant sampling were studied. This study was proposed since one of the most widely used sampling systems in carrying out research on epigean arthropods is by means of this type of traps. This is because it is a simple and versatile system, low cost, and efficient for capturing active species, regardless of their activity rhythms. In general, the traps are containers, usually in the form of a glass, which are buried at ground level with some preservative or substance that prevents the escape of the individuals. It is possible to use containers with different characteristics regarding their diameter, material or form, and different possible methodologies, including the use of baits, or of substances to reduce individuals escaping, different spatial arrangement of traps, such as in transects or squares, or the use of accessories such as lids or funnels. Due to the variety of traps characteristics and sampling methodologies, different effects or biases may be derived which might affect the species capture rate. This hinders the comparison of Works carried out with pitfall traps. In this dissertation, it is carried out a review of different possible variables. Some of them have been already studied, but we have found contradictions in the results, while others have not been studied in the context of ants’ research. To place the traps on the ground, we dug to bury them with their tops flush to the soil surface; afterwards we filled the gaps and levelled them. This manipulation generates an alteration in the soil structure that in groups like collembola, spiders and beetles produces a temporary increase in the capture rate. This is called the digging-in effect. In this work, it was studied how the type of habitat affects the capture rate and how long this effect persists for ants. Regarding the habitat, the differences between open or closed areas (with tree cover) and grasslands were studied. Although there were differences between the assemblages and species richness due to the type of habitat, there was no general alteration in the species capture rate or in the composition of the samples that could be attributed to the digging-in effect. Concerning the prevalence time of this effect, it was observed that in the first 24 hours after opening the traps there was an increase in the overall capture rate, although when each individual species was analysed, the digging-in effect affected them differently. Nevertheless, after 48 hours, no differences were observed either in the species capture rate, or in the composition of the samples. Therefore, at least for these ecosystems, with a sampling time (time in which the pitfall traps are active, meaning open and capturing individuals) of 48 hours or more, the digging-in effect will not bias the results of our samples. Regarding the possible bias factors due to the trap characteristics, one of the most studied is the size of the trap aperture. There are numerous studies that conclude that by increasing the size of the mouth of the pitfall trap, the number of the captured species increases. The problem is that these studies do not use comparable traps (with the same characteristics) or, if they do, they do not specify it in their methodology. Another factor to take into consideration is trap depth. The few studies that evaluate this variable dismiss its influence on the total number of species caught. Therefore, in this dissertation the following studies were posed. The first one considers the size of the trap aperture and depth at the same time, comparing 4 types of traps, which have the same form, material, and manufacturer. This study concluded that a larger size of the apertura (perimeter) led to an increase in the capture of species. It was also related to greater catches of workers for those species with larger body sizes (body length greater than 4.5 mm), determining a directly proportional relationship between the volume of the trap and the number of workers captured. It was also recorded a tendency for a change in the composition of the ant samples. In this way, traps of different sizes captured the species in different proportions. However, although these slightly differences were detected, regarding the depth of the traps, these were not significant. Hence, the second study was proposed. In this one, two traps of the same model and manufacturer were compared, with the same aperture size, but different depth (7.3 versus 11.6 cm). In this case, even though what is described in the bibliography is confirmed (the traps captured similar total number of species), the average number of species and workers were higher for deeper traps. In our work we verified that the increase in captures (number of workers) is not the same for all the species, so, dismissing that the size of the ant played some kind of role, we hypothesize that this could be due to differences in the escape rate related to the climbing ability of each species. Finally, we present a study that analyse how the similarities between the composition of captured ants are affected by the distance at which two consecutive pitfall traps are set. The aim was to find out what is the minimum distance between pitfall traps to avoid significant spatial autocorrelation, consequently to avoid pseudo-replication. This study was carried out in two Mediterranean grasslands composed of nitrophilic plants, where we placed pitfall traps at different distances. We concluded that, from a distance between pairs of traps of 5 m, the autocorrelation between the traps disappeared.
