El apoyo geo-espacial de la OTAN a la I.S.A.F. en Afganistán

Este artículo trata de dar a conocer la importancia que la información geo-espacial posee como elemento clave para la toma de decisiones en las operaciones de apoyo para la paz de la Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte (OTAN). El caso descrito es Afganistán y, en concreto, el apoyo geo-espacial que la OTAN, a través de la Fuerza Internacional de Apoyo a la Seguridad (ISAF), está llevando a cabo en este país. Se trata de la misión de paz de mayor envergadura en la que la OTAN se ha visto jamás inmersa, por la superficie territorial del área en cuestión (650.000 Km2), número de efectivos desplegados (43.250 hombres, incluyendo el personal nacional de apoyo) e inversión económica realizada. En palabras de su Secretario General, el Sr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer ¿Este es uno de los más desafiantes retos que la OTAN ha emprendido, pues contribuye significativamente a la seguridad internacional?.
Показать больше [+] Меньше [-]This paper intends to show the importance of the geospatial information as a key element for the decision-making process in the peace keeping operations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Afghanistan has been chosen and particularly the geospatial support that NATO through its International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is carrying out. This is the biggest peace mission where NATO has ever been involved, due to its territorial extension (650.000 Km2), number of troops (43.250 soldiers, including national support elements) and economic investment. According to its Secretary General, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, “This is one of the most challenging tasks NATO has ever taken on, but it is a critical contribution to international security”.
