Intercultural and multilingual education: the case of the Ramas | Educación intercultural y multilingüe: El caso de los Ramas

Among the ethnic groups of the Atlantic Coast recognized by the Autonomy Law, the Rama community seems to hold the distinction of both being the least known and the most mythologized.  Despite the number of documents that have been compiled, from colonial sources to 19th century travelers' notes and 20th century anthropological and linguistic studies, information accumulated on this ethnic group does not seem to be widespread.  Nor does it seem easy to alter the image outsiders have of the Rama community.  Partly because of the latter, this author of this article attempts to update this image through a description of their current intercultural and bilingual program and the way this program reflects the community’s characteristics.  The information that is presented in this article comes from a bread Rama language project, which started in conjunction with the autonomy project in the 1980s and continues to this date.

De las etnias de la Costa Atlántica reconocidas por el Estatuto de Autonomía, la comunidad rama parece tener la particularidad de ser la más desconocida y la más mitificada a la vez.  A pesar de la documentación que se ha recopilado, desde fuentes coloniales, notas de viajeros del siglo XIX y estudios antropológicos y lingüísticos del siglo XX, no parece que se haya difundido la información que se ha acumulado sobre esta etnia, ni tampoco que sea fácil cambiar la imagen que se tiene de ella desde afuera.  En parte por eso, la autora de este artículo se propone actualizar esta imagen, para dar a conocer las particularidades de su actual programa de educación intercultural bilingüe en la medida que refleja particularidades de esta comunidad.  La información presentada proviene de las actividades de un amplio Proyecto de Lengua Rama que se inició a la par del Proyecto de Autonomía en los años ochenta, y que sigue desarrollándose.
