Caraterização dos habitats propícios à conservação da Estrelinha-de-Santa-Maria (Regulus regulus sanctaemariae)

A biodiversidade insular açoriana apresenta uma particular riqueza e vulnerabilidade à qual a dinâmica dos seus ecossistemas e a influência humana nestes é indissociável. Ainda que o arquipélago dos Açores apresente uma baixa diversidade relativa de passeriformes, existem várias espécies nativas e endémicas onde se destaca o género Regulus que apresenta três subespécies. A Estrelinha-de-Santa-Maria (Regulus regulus sanctaemariae) é a única subespécie endémica da ilha de Santa Maria e apresenta o estatuto da IUCN de Criticamente em Perigo, associado à reduzida área territorial de Santa Maria e à fragmentação do seu habitat natural. No entanto, não existem estudos pormenorizados sobre a sua abundância relativa e ecologia. A presente tese pretende alargar o conhecimento sobre a diversidade dos passeriformes nidificantes na ilha de Santa Maria, e em especial a distribuição e abundância relativa da subespécie R. regulus sanctaemariae, perante a disponibilidade de habitats e a heterogeneidade ambiental. Para a seleção dos locais de estudo aplicou-se o conceito da "diversidade ambiental" e a amostragem no campo baseou-se em censos a partir da metodologia de ponto-de-escuta. Para determinação dos padrões de diversidade dos passeriformes, procedeu-se ao cálculo da densidade e diversidade dos passeriformes por hectare, posteriormente avaliados em diversas análises de forma a determinar quais as variáveis ambientais que explicam a variação desses padrões dentro do mesmo habitat, nomeadamente: análise multidimensional não métrica; análise aglomerativa; análise de variâncias e análise de regressão múltipla. Os resultados obtidos põem em evidência diferenças na abundância e diversidade de passeriformes nos vários tipos de uso do solo estudados, sendo que os habitats florestados são os que apresentam maior diversidade e equilíbrio populacional. Ainda que a subespécie R. regulus sanctaemariae acompanhe esta tendência, é de notar que a densidade deste endemismo varia significativamente entre os pontos onde ocorre, sendo os índices de perturbação da paisagem, declive e altimetria, as variáveis explicativas da variação na distribuição e abundância desta espécie. Com base neste estudo, fica claro que a expansão da R. regulus sanctaemariae implica a montagem de sebes vivas com árvores e arbustos endémicos de forma a aumentar a penetração desta espécie em habitats modificados pelo Homem. A conservação da subespécie Regulus regulus sanctaemariae irá depender largamente da definição de uma estratégia global e integrada onde a gestão do uso do solo será um pilar essencial no sucesso da conservação desta subespécie.

ABSTRACT: The biodiversity of the Azores islands presents a particular richness and vulnerability from which the dynamics of ecosystems and human influence are inseparable. Although the Azores presents a relative low diversity of passerines, there are several native and endemic species, from which the genus Regulus who has three subspecies stands out. The Santa Maria goldcrest (Regulus regulus sanctaemariae) is the only endemic subspecies from Santa Maria and displays the IUCN status of Critically Endangered, associated to the reduced land area of Santa Maria and the fragmentation of their natural habitats. However, there are no detailed studies on its relative abundance and ecology. This thesis aims to extend the knowledge about the diversity of breeding passerines on Santa Maria island, and in particular the distribution and relative abundance of the subspecies R. regulus sanctaemariae given the availability of habitats and environmental heterogeneity. The concept of "environmental diversity" was applied to the selection of study sites and the field sampling was based on point counts censuses. To determine the patterns of passerines’ diversity, it was calculated the density and the diversity of passerines per hectare. Subsequently these patterns were analyzed to determine which environmental variables explain their variation within the same habitat, including: non-metric multidimensional analysis, agglomerative analysis, analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis. The obtained results highlighted the differences in the abundance and diversity of the passerines along the various types of land uses. The forested habitats are those with greater diversity and population equilibrium. Although R. regulus sanctaemariae follows this trend, it is prominent that the density of this species varies significantly between the points where it occurs. The contents of landscape disturbance, altitude and slope are the explanatory variables of variation in the distribution and abundance of this species. Based on this study, it is clear that the expansion of R. regulus sanctaemariae implies the use of endemic trees and shrubs in hedges allowing the spread of this species in habitats modified by man. The conservation of Regulus regulus sanctaemariae largely depends on the definition of one comprehensive and integrated management strategy where the land use acts as a key factor to the conservation success of this subspecies.
