Influence of Long-term Factors on Sugar Consumption in Czech Republic

Svatosova, Veronika
The paper focuses on the identification of long-term factors on the part of consumers that may affect sugar consumption in the Czech Republic. These factors were selected for the purposes of the research survey of the paper on the basis of a literature search. The influence of selected factors on sugar consumption was investigated using a multiple linear regression model. Factors that enter the model are the growth coefficients of sugar consumption, sugar prices, consumption of confectionery products, population and average nominal wage index. The subject of the research survey is selected based on statistical data from the Czech Statistical Office in the years 1990-2019. The model of multiple linear regression showed only an indirect (negative) dependence of the growth coefficient of population on the growth coefficient of sugar consumption in the Czech Republic. The interaction of other monitored factors in the model has not been proven, and therefore the model as a whole cannot confirm the main research hypothesis, i.e., there is no relationship between sugar consumption and selected long-term factors on the part of consumers in the Czech Republic. The research survey showed that the price, consumption of confectionery or the salary level do not affect the consumption of sugar in the Czech Republic. The research survey of the paper was limited to the influence of long-term factors that may affect sugar consumption, short-term factors, especially a group of personal and psychological factors are not taken into account in the model, although sugar consumption may play a more significant role.
