Biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters), which is derived from triglycerides by transesterification with methanol, has attracted considerable attention during the past decade as a renewable, biodegradable, nontoxic fuel, being an important mean of progress to reduce greenhouse gases and local pollution. Biodiesel can be used either in the pure form or as blends on conventional petrodiesel in automobiles without any major modifications. This review paper presents the general aspects of biodiesel production, its properties, composition and its future potential.
