Growth performance and carbon sequestration potential of a 20-ha NGP reforestation site in Brgy. Jimilian, Loboc, Bohol [Philippines]

Numerous reforestation projects worldwide are increasing in response to climate change mitigation efforts through offsetting carbon emissions. This study examines the growth of planted trees and estimates current and future carbon stock at a reforestation site in Loboc, Bohol, Philippines, under the National Greening Program. The growth of the planted seedlings was found to be inferior compared to other planted seedlings in the Philippines. Moreover, the study estimated that planted seedlings contribute minimally, accounting for only 10.76% of the site's total AGB. However, NDVI reveals an increase in vegetation, as evidenced by an 80.14% increase in NVDI from 2011 to 2023. Yet, this increase cannot be attributed to the planted seedlings, as only 9.13% of the population was initially planted in 2012, emphasizing possible natural succession. The total carbon density of the site was recorded at 55.51 MgC/ha, lower than various secondary forests nationwide. InVEST projected a substantial increase of carbon, reaching up to 4050 Mg by 2033 and 5812 Mg by 2043. The results indicate that the NGP site has failed to significantly increase vegetation but has potential as a carbon offset mechanism. It suggests exploring alternative, cost-effective methods like ANR to achieve similar purposes and outcomes.
