Effect of biodegradable plastics on paddy rice growth and greenhouse gas emission under flooding conditions

Microplastics may cause experimental problems not only in ocean, but also an in terrestrial ecosystem. Biodegradable plastics have become popular, aiming to avoid such problems. However, biodegradable plastics applied to soil to create greenhouse gasses and inhibit plant growth under aerobic conditions. This study aimed to examine the effect of biodegradable plastic on paddy rice growth and greenhouse gas emission under flooding conditions. Four kind of materials were amended to paddy soil taken from Kuju-kuri, Chiba, Japan. Pot experiment was conducted with rice (Oryza sativa ver. Milky Queen). Treatments were 1) nonwoven fabric sheets made of polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene-succinate (PBS), 2) laminate sheets made of polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) and pulp. 3) cellose filter paper to compare with 4) rice straw and 5) soil only. Amended rate was 0.03% w/w based on Fuller et al. (2016). Methane (CH4) emission was measured by chamber method and FID-GC. Amendments showed significant increase of CH4 emission only with cellose, indicating biodegradable plastics had no significant impact on CH4 emission from paddy rice soil. Rice yield had also no significant difference among treatment. Further investigation with different materials and application rate of biodegradable plastics in longer period was needed.
