Effects of using organic liquid plant supplement as an alternative nutrient solution for hydroponically-grown lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.)

Hydroponics is gaining a good reputation in food production, but concerns of pollution from inorganic nutrient solution (NS) encourage the use of a more sustainable cultivation system. One alternative approach can be the use of organic NS and thus, this study aimed to evaluate the growth and yield of lettuce in response to organic liquis plant supplement (LPS) NS and inorganic simple nutrient addition program (SNAP) NS. The experiment was conducted at the greenhouse of Plant Tissue Culture Facility from August to December 2022. It was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) and the treatments were: (1) inorganic SNAP NS, and (2) 0.5%, (3) 1%, and (4) 1.5% organic LPS NS. Results revealed that lettuce had lower number of leaves, fresh and dry weight, chlorophyll content, and nutrient uptake in organic LPS NS. Lettuce had a value of 0.01g N, 0.001g P, and 0.00 1g K in 0.5% organic LPS NS, while the inorganic SNAP NS had 0.06g N, 0.01g P and 0.01g K. Meanwhile, lettuce had a similar root-shoot ratio under inorganic SNAP NS and 0.5% organic LPS NS. These show that the use of LPS as a nutrient solution is promising if optimized for hydroponics.
