Origem e retenção da matéria orgânica em solos sob sistemas de produção florestal no Sul do Brasil | Origin and retention of soil organic matter in forest systems in southern Brazil

Tendo em vista o aumento das áreas com florestas plantadas nos últimos anos e que a matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) é afetada diretamente pelos diferentes usos do solo, este trabalho teve como objetivo investigar a origem e retenção da matéria orgânica em solos subtropicais brasileiros sob sistemas de produção florestal. Para atingir esse objetivo, três estudos foram desenvolvidos. No estudo 1, as alterações das propriedade químicas do solo e a composição química da MOS foram investigadas em Cambissolos sob cultivo de Acacia e de Eucalyptus há 7 anos. O cultivo de Acacia favoreceu o aumento da saturação de alumínio e redução do pH, Ca+2 e Mg+2, enquanto que no solo sob Eucalyptus, devido a aplicação de calcário, isso não foi observado. O teor de C do solo não foi alterado após o cultivo de Acacia e de Eucalyptus, porém o aumento de compostos derivados de polissacarídeos e o enriquecimento de C31 no solo sob Acacia, indica a entrada de material vegetal da serrapilheira da Acacia. No solo sob Eucalyptus não houve evidência de entrada de material da serrapilheira do Eucalyptus, no entanto, a presença de compostos mais degradados indicou alteração da composição da MOS após introdução do Eucalyptus. O estudo 2 foi realizado nas mesmas áreas do estudo 1, sendo determinado os estoques de C e N nos compartimentos físicos da MOS (FLL-fração leve livre, FLO-fração leve oclusa, e FP-fração pesada) e sua composição química molecular também foi investigada, em sub-camadas até 20 cm de profundidade. Alterações nos estoques de C e N das frações leves na camada de 0-5 cm foram observadas pelo aumento nos estoques de C das FLL e FLO na área sob Eucalyptus e a entrada de biomassa da serrapilheira do Eucalyptus foi detectada pela presença de biomarcador específico C29, a qual não foi observada quando analisado o solo inteiro (Estudo I). Em consideração a área sob Acacia, redução dos estoques de C e N da FLO foi observado. No entanto, a presença de compostos derivados de polissacarídeos e a presença de biomarcador C31 da serrapilheira da Acacia, indicou entrada de biomassa da Acacia nas frações leves. O estudo 3 investigou a retenção de C e a contribuição do Eucalyptus para os compartimentos físicos da MOS cultivados há 22 anos em diferentes solos. No Argissolo o cultivo de Eucalyptus favoreceu o aumento do teor de C e N do solo e dos compartimentos físicos, enquanto que no Cambissolo e Neossolo o teor de C do solo não foi alterado e o teor de N diminuiu até 10 cm de profundidade. Em consideração aos compartimentos físicos, no Cambissolo houve uma redução do teor de C e N na fração silte até os 20 cm de profundidade enquanto que no Neossolo nenhuma alteração relevante foi observada. Apesar do comportamento distinto observado quanto aos teores de C e N no solo e nos compartimentos físicos em diferentes solos, a presença de biomarcadores específicos da serrapilheira do Eucalyptus foi observada nos compartimentos físicos em todos os solos sob cultivo de Eucalyptus.

Considering the increase of forest plantation areas in the last years and that the soil organic matter (SOM) is directly affected by soil uses, this work aimed at investigating the impact of forest systems on the content and chemical molecular composition of SOM in Brazilian subtropical soils. For this objective, three studies were conducted: i) In the first study, the alterations of the soil nutrients and the SOM composition were investigated in Cambisols under Acacia and Eucalyptus plantations in the last 7 years. The Acacia plantation lead to a reduction of the contents of exchangeable P, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ and a decrease of the soil pH until a depth of 40 cm, whereas under Eucalyptus plantation only the exchangeable K+ content decreased. The carbon content of the soil was not changed after the Acacia and Eucalyptus plantation. An enrichment of polysaccharide-derived compounds in soil under Acacia plantation, together with the specific biomarker C31, might indicate an input of biomass from the new forest vegetation. At the Eucalyptus plantation site an increase of the proportion of degraded compounds on the SOM composition was observed. ii) The second study was conducted in the same areas as the first study and the C and N stocks of the soil and the physical compartments of the SOM (FLF - free light fraction, OLF - occluded light fraction and HF - heavy fraction) and its molecular chemical composition was investigated up to a depth 0 to 20 cm. An increase of the C stocks of the FLF and OLF in the Eucalyptus plantation area at 0-5 cm depth was observed, what was explained by the input of biomass from Eucalyptus litter, indicated by the presence of the specific biomarker C29. For the Acacia plantation, the stocks of C and N of the OLF decreased. However, the presence of polysaccharides-derived compounds and the specific biomarker C31 from Acacia litter, showed an input of Acacia biomass in the light fractions. iii) In the third study, we investigated the retention of C and the contribution of the Eucalyptus to physical compartments of SOM in soils under Eucalyptus plantation after 22 years. In the Acrisol, Eucalyptus plantation promoted an increase of C and N contents of the soil and physical compartments, while in the Cambisol and Inceptisol the C content of the soil did not change, whereas the N content decreased up to 10 cm depth. In the silt fraction up to 20 cm depth, C and N contents of the Cambisol decreased, while no significant change was observed in the Inceptisol. Despite the differing behavior observed for the C and N contents of the physical compartments in different soils, specific biomarkers from Eucalyptus litter were present in all physical compartments in all soils under Eucalyptus plantation.
