Como a estrutura do pasto e o comportamento ingestivo impactam no gasto energético de novilhos em pastagem natural? | How sward structure and ingestive behavior impact on energy expenditure of steers in natural grassland?

O bioma Campos Sulinos é considerado um dos biomas mais ricos em diversidade do mundo, ocupando 2,3% do território brasileiro, além de se estender por terras do Uruguai e da Argentina. No Brasil, o bioma é chamado de Pampa e encontra-se restrito ao Rio Grande do Sul, recobrindo 68,8% da área do estado. Este bioma apresenta alta riqueza de espécies vegetais, com ocorrência de 3000 espécies, em virtude das condições edafoclimáticas. Pesquisas tem sido realizada com o intuito de promover aumento de produtividade, eficiência, sustentabilidade e conservação dos ambientes pastoris naturais no bioma Pampa, além de permitir melhor compreendimento do ambiente pastoril e suas relações com os herbívoros. Nesse contexto, este estudo tem como objetivo determinar os fatores que afetam o gasto energético de novilhos em pastagem natural manejada sob diferentes ofertas de forragem. Foram avaliados novilhos sob três ofertas de forragem contrastantes: 4, 8- 12 e 16% peso vivo (PV). Foram realizadas avaliações de estrutura do pasto e de comportamento ingestivo. O gasto energético foi estimado pelo método da frequência cardíaca com auxílio de um frequencímetro. O deslocamento (m/min) dos animais foi monitorado com auxílio de um GPS de alta precisão (rover). As distintas ofertas promovem estruturas contrastantes de pasto (P<0,05). As ofertas de forragem 8-12 e 16% PV mantem-se dentro de uma faixa de amplitude ótima, entre produção animal e vegetal, assim como a frequência de touceiras encontrada nessas ofertas. A identificação de classes de itens alimentares (P<0,05), demonstrou que o manejo das ofertas 8-12 e 16% PV apresentam uma estrutura de pasto diversificada, em relação a oferta 4% PV. Os animais realizaram menor número de passos por minuto e maior tempo de permanência na estação alimentar nos tratamentos 8-12 e 16% PV. As ofertas de forragem 8-12 e 16% PV proporcionam estruturas de pasto favoráveis à busca e apreensão de forragem por bovinos em pastejo. O oferecimento de ofertas de forragem moderada (8-12% PV) não proporcionou (P>0,05) redução no gasto energético de novilhos manejados em pastagem natural, comparado com ofertas de forragem baixa (4%PV) e alta (16% PV). Os resultados de comportamento ingestivo indicam que a velocidade de ingestão pode ser um fator a ser estudado para verificar a redução do gasto energético quando aos animais encontram-se em ofertas de forragem e estruturas de pasto, como 8-12 e 16% PV. O gasto energético de bovinos está diretamente relacionado com a estrutura do pasto, consequentemente com os processos de busca e apreensão. Portanto, medir o gasto energético dos herbívoros em um ambiente pastoril complexo, como as pastagens naturais do bioma Pampa, possibilita definir metas de manejo de estrutura de pasto que proporcionem redução no gasto energético dos animais, consequentemente aumento no desempenho dos bovinos, eficiência de uso do recurso disponível e preservação do habitat das pastagens naturais.

The Campos Sulinos biome is considered one of the richest biomes in diversity in the world, occupying 2.3% of the Brazilian territory, in addition to extending over Uruguay and Argentina. In Brazil, the biome is called Pampa and is restricted to Rio Grande do Sul, covering 68.8% of the state's area. This biome has a high richness of plant species, with the occurrence of 3000 species, due to the edaphoclimatic conditions. Researches has been carried out in order to promote increased productivity, efficiency, sustainability and conservation of natural pastoral environments in the Pampa biome, in addition to allowing a better understanding of the pastoral environment and its relations with herbivores. In this context, this study aims to determine the factors that affect the energy expenditure of steers in natural grassland managed under different forage allowances. Steers were evaluated under three contrasting forage allowances: 4, 8-12 and 16% body weight (BW). Sward structure and ingestive behavior assessments were performed. Energy expenditure was estimated using the heart rate method with the aid of a frequency meter. The displacement (m / min) of the animals was monitored using a high precision GPS (rover). The different forage allowances promoted contrasting sward structures (P <0.05). The forage allowances 8-12 and 16% BW remain within an optimal range between animal and forage production, as well as the tussock frequency found in these treatments. The identification of classes of food items (P <0.05), demonstrated that the forage allowances 8-12 and 16% BW have a diversified sward structure, in relation to allowance 4% BW. The animals performed fewer steps per minute and longer permanence time in the feeding station in treatments 8-12 and 16% BW. The forage allowances 8-12 and 16% BW provide sward structure favourable to the searching and apprehension of forage by grazing cattle. The moderate forage allowance (8-12% BW) did not provide (P> 0.05) reduction in the energy expenditure of steers managed in natural grassland, compared with low (4% BW) and high (16% BW) forage allowances. The results of ingestive behavior indicate that the herbage intake rate may be a factor to be studied to verify the reduction of energy expenditure when the animals are in forage allowance and sward structure, such as 8-12 and 16% BW. The energy expenditure of cattle is directly related to the sward structure, consequently with the searching and apprehension processes. Therefore, measuring the energy expenditure of herbivores in a complex pastoral environment, such as the natural grassland of the Pampa biome, makes it possible to define sward structure management goals that provide a reduction in the energy expenditure of the animals, consequently increasing the animal performance, efficiency of use of the available resource and preservation of the natural grassland habitat.
