To achieve the global sustainability goals, a major societal change is required such as changed consumption and production patterns. It has become increasingly important for companies to environmentally adapt their products in order to strive for products with increased environmental performance. Lifecycle analyzes (LCAs) are a tool used to quantitatively measure a product´s environmental impact throughout its life cycle, from raw material withdrawals to final management. In order to be able to influence a product´s environmental impact, environmental considerations should already be taken into the product development phase, as early as possible in new product development. This study has investigated how a life-cycle perspective can be implemented in a manufacturing company´s product development process using the Ecodesign wheel. The Ecodesign wheel is a tool that consists of eight steps aimed at improving the environmental performance of a product. The study was based on the manufacturing company Fagerhults Belysning which manufactures lighting fixtures. The result shows that the steps of Ecodesign wheel can be implemented in a manufacturing company´s existing product development process by being integrated into the various phases of product development. As a tool, a checklist has been drawn up to ensure that the steps of the Ecodeign wheel are take into account in order to strive for greater environmental considerations in new development. Implementing a lifecycle perspective at an early stage creates awareness and at the same time leads to products with improves environmental properties but also to reduced resource use and reduced costs.
