Influence of coverages vegetables on performance of peach and attributes soil | Influencia de las coberturas vegetales sobre el comportamiento del cultivo del duraznero y sobre los atributos del suelo

Cover crops improves soil and water conservation in agriculture but it uses requires local experiences and adaptations. The aim of this work was to quantify the effect of different cover crops in the inter-rows of peach on soil organic matter and water content evolution, and on the vegetative and reproductive traits of peach trees (Prunus persica L. Batsch) at the south area of Mendoza (San Rafael), Argentina. Plants of 14 years-old of the ‘Cristalino’ variety, grafted on ‘Nemaguard’ rootstock, conducted in an open vase system, and planted in a sandy loam soil 4.5 x 3 m apart were used. Trials were conducted during two consecutive years (2011 and 2012). The treatments were T0-Control, without cover crops (LM), where natural vegetation at the inter-rows of peach trees were repeatedly removed by mechanical tillage; T1-Permanent cover crop of Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.); and T2-Annual cover-crop of a 50 % mixture of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.), cv. ‘La Enramada’ and oats (Avena sativa L.), cv. ‘Calen’. Dry matter production of the cover crops, changes of soil organic fractions and volumetric soil-moisture content were periodically evaluated. Soil water retention curves were also adjusted for each treatment. Furthermore, the effects of cover crops treatments on vegetative and reproductive traits of peach trees were measured. An experimental design in a randomized complete block with three replications was used. Dry matter production of Lucerne (T1) tripled that of annuals cover during the period from August to January. The coarse particulate carbon (COPg) permanent (Lucerne cover)soil cover between the first and the last measurement increased 100%, rapidly reflecting the benefits of mulches.No significantly changes were observed in the other soil organic carbon fractions. The volumetric soil-moisture content normally was higher in both cover crops treatments, reaching a maximum difference of 16 % in the surface soil-layer (0-20 cm) in comparison with the Control. Cover treatments improved peach yield (3-7 kg per plant), whereas only annual covers increased nitrogen and calcium foliar content (+23 – 28,7 %).

Las coberturas vegetales se caracterizan por tener multi-propósitos, las cuales incluyen la conservación del suelo y del agua. Se pretendió obtener información del aporte de las coberturas vegetales sobre la evolución de la materia orgánica, el estado hídrico y diferentes indicadores físicos del suelo, y sobre el comportamiento vegetativo y reproductivo del duraznero (Prunus persica L. Batsch) en la zona sur de Mendoza (San Rafael). Se utilizaron plantas de la variedad Cristalino de 14 años de edad, injertadas sobre pie Nemaguard, conducidas en forma de vaso, plantadas en un suelo franco arenoso, en un marco de 4,5 x 3 m. Los tratamientos fueron T0- Control, sin cobertura, con laboreo mecánico (LM): se controlaron las malezas en el espacio interfilar en primavera-verano mediante rastra de discos; T1-Cobertura permanente de alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.); T2-Cobertura anual de vicia (Vicia sativa L.), cv La Enramada y avena (Avena sativa L.), cv. Calen. Se evaluó el aporte de materia seca de las coberturas, el cambio de las fracciones orgánicas y el contenido de humedad volumétrica del suelo, y se ajustaron las curvas de retención hídrica. En el cultivo, se evaluó el efecto de las coberturas sobre el crecimiento vegetativo y reproductivo. Se utilizó un diseño experimental en bloques completamente al azar con tres repeticiones. La alfalfa triplicó el valor de materia seca de la cobertura anual en el período de agosto a enero. El carbono particulado grueso (COPg) del suelo de la cobertura permanente entre la primera y la última medición aumento un 100 %, reflejando rápidamente los beneficios de las coberturas vegetales. Las demás fracciones de carbono orgánico no se modificaron significativamente. El contenido de humedad volumétrica normalmente fue mayor en el tratamiento con coberturas, llegando a alcanzar una diferencia máxima del 16 % en el estrato superficial (0-20 cm). Los tratamientos de coberturas lograron un mayor rendimiento por planta, entre 3 y 7 kg, y el contenido de nitrógeno y calcio foliar aumentó en el tratamiento anual entre un +23 y +28,7 %, respectivamente.
