New rice cultivar for sake brewing 'Torihime'

A new cultivar for sake brewing 'Torihime' was developed in 2008. The pedigree and characteristics of this cultivar are summarized as follows. 1. The breeding of 'Torihime' was started in 1996 by crossing 'Shimakeisake48gou' and 'Tamasakae'. 2. The individual selection was performed on the F3 population planted in a paddy field in 1999. Since then, the pedigree method has been applied for breeding work. 3. 'Torihime' belongs to the extreme early group as same as 'Gohyakumangoku'. This cultivar is panicle number type. 4. The culm length is shorter than those of 'Gohyakumangoku'. 5. The grains are larger than those of 'Gohyakumangoku', it has an excellent apparent grain quality. 6. The white core size in the kernel of this variety is larger than that of 'Gohyakumangoku' 7. The cultivar is difficult to occur The sprouting than 'Gohyakumangoku'. 8. Sake produced using the cultivar tastes as good as that brewed from 'Gohyakumangoku'. 9. This variety is well adapted to cultivation in low uplands or uplands of Tottori Prefecture.
