Effects of low fishmeal diets on the growth performance and physiological condition of ayu Plecoglossus altivelis

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of low fishmeal diets on the growth performance and physiological condition of ayu Plecoglossus altivelis. A 51 % fishmeal diet (control, diet FM51) and two low fishmeal diets in which 40 and 60 % of fishmeal in diet FM51 was replaced by defatted soybean meal and corn gluten meal (diets FM32 and FM20), were fed to juvenile ayu (initial body weight, 22 g) for 3 months. Growth, feed efficiency ratio and feed consumption rate were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between treatments. Except for plasma triacylglycerol concentration that was significantly lower in the FM20 diet group (P < 0.05) than in fish fed diet FM51, there were no apparent physiological disorders in the blood characteristics, biliary bile acid status and morphological conditions in the liver and distal intestine of fish fed the low fishmeal diets. Proximate compositions of the whole body and muscle were similar between treatments except for the muscle crude protein content of fish fed diet FM20 being lower than that of fish fed FM32. These results indicate that approximately 40 % of fishmeal in ayu diet could be replaced by soybean meal and corn gluten meal without detrimental effects on their growth, nutrient utilization and physiology.
