Effects of postharvest near infrared light exposure on quality of agriculcultural product

We investigated the effects of near infrared light (wavelength 850 nm, intensity 100 W/square m) irradiation on postharvest agricultural products, obtaining the following results. 1. Irradiation of 60 or 180 seconds on eggplant and 10 seconds on 'Black Beauty' type eggplant suppressed browning pericarp, peduncle and calyx. However, 480 second irradiation of eggplant and 30 second irradiation on the 'Black Beauty' type eggplant increased browning. 2. Irradiation of 30 seconds on Shishitoh pepper suppressed rhizopus rot. 3. Irradiation of 30 seconds on Mioga suppressed rot. 4. Irradiation of 15, 20, and 30 seconds on Chinese chives suppressed leaf yellowing. 5. Irradiation of 8 seconds on Yuzu suppressed green and blue mold. 6. Among cut flowers, irradiation of 10 and 30 seconds on Solidaster extended vase life by 2 days, but Dahlia, Lily, Gloriosa and Blue Star did not show any influence.
