Plomo, arsénico, cadmio y mercurio: efectos y estudios en Colombia

Los metales pesados han estado presentes en la historia de la humanidad desde tiempos inmemorables y sus efectos sobre el cuerpo se han ido conociendo conforme pasan los años. Actualmente las consecuencias de estos tanto por su exposición crónica o aguda se han estudiado profundamente y no cabe duda de su toxicidad. En Colombia los estudios sobre los efectos y concentraciones para 4 metales pesados: plomo, mercurio, cadmio y arsénico son pocos y conforme aumentan los proyectos mineros la probabilidad de intoxicación en la población es mayor. Este trabajo recopila los estudios en Colombia de estos cuatro metales y sugiere la atención especial al mercurio dado a que en la actualidad es el metal pesado que más problemas está y puede causar.

Heavy metals have been present in the history of mankind since immemorial times and their effects on the body have been known as the years go by. Currently the consequences of these metals both for their chronic or acute exposure have been studied deeply and there is no doubt about their toxicity. In Colombia the studies on the effects and concentrations for 4 heavy metals: lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic are few and as mining projects increase the probability of intoxication in the population is greater. This work collects the studies in Colombia of these four metals and suggests to pay special attention to mercury given that at present time it is the heavy metal that is the most problematic.
