Governance, coordination and distribution along commodity value chains, Rome, 4-5 April 2006
2007
FAO
The impact of market power on the benefits from trade liberalization is detailed in terms of trade, profits and the allocation of resources where markets are monopolistic or oligopolistic in various stages of vertically related commodity value chains. The workshop explored the changing structure of commodity chains for many agricultural commodities, particularly fresh produce. This changing pattern and the development of market power affect resource allocation in agriculture and equity between producers, and have implications for domestic as well as international policies. Coffee producers for example, account for 10 percent of total value added while processors, roasters and retailers receive 20-30 percent respectively.
