Cossart, Pascale | Interactions Bactéries-Cellules (UIBC) ; Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA)-Institut Pasteur [Paris] (IP)-Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM) | I thank all present and previous members of the laboratory for contributions to the discoveries that they made in the laboratory. I also apologize to my Listeria colleagues whose work could not be cited or discussed because of space imitations. I give special thanks to D. Ribet for help in manuscript preparation. I thank H. Bierne, O. Dussurget, M. Lecuit, J. Mellin, S. Mostowy, D. Ribet, and F. Stavru for critical comments on the manuscript and M. Bonazzi, S. Brisse, D. Ribet, and N. Sesto for help in figure preparation. Through the analysis of both its saprophytic life and infectious process, new concepts in microbiology, cell biology, and pathogenesis have been discovered. This review will update our knowledge on this intracellular pathogen and highlight the most recent breakthroughs. Promising areas of investigation such as the increasingly recognized relevance for the infectious process, of RNA-mediated regulations in the bacterium, and the role of bacterially controlled posttranslational and epigenetic modifications in the host will also be discussed.
