An experiment was conducted, to determine the effect of number and position of infra-red heat lamps in sow farrowing pens on piglet survival rate. 2I Landrace/Largewhite cross-bred sows and three pure Large White sows were used in the experiment and 245 piglets were born alive. Eight sows were allocated to each of three treatments. Treatment I had only one infra-red lamp in the side creep area, Treatment 2 had one infra-red lamp in each of two side creep areas and Treatment 3 had one lamp in the side creep area and one lamp behind the sow. The lamp behind the sow in Treatment 3 was moved to the side creep area without a lamp 24 hours after farrowing was completed. Piglets in litters produced by sows on the treatments with two infra-red lamps had better survival rates than sows on treatments with only one lamp. Of the treatments with two lamps, the one with a lamp behind gave the best piglet survival rate (95.5 versus 82.9 per cent for the treatment with one lamp on either side and 72.8 per cent for treatment with only one lamp).
