In the course of a joint project supported by the German Foundation for Environment and the Ministry for Environment of Lower Saxony, an ablative fast pyrolysis pilot plant and a Diesel-based CHP plant were built and operated by PYTEC Thermochemische Anlagen GmbH. The plant has a design capacity of 6 Mg/d dry biomass; the CHP plant has a power output of approximately 300 kW/h. The pyrolysis plant was initiated in spring 2006 and has been running for different tests. Continuous runs of eight hours were achieved until now. The CHP plant was modified and 1000 kg of bio-oil (with 4 wt.% of diesel) were combusted within 10 hours of continuous operation. - The ablative pyrolyser system is a completely new and compact design comprising a revolving feeding system for wood chips and a rotating hot disk as heat surface. Neither a heat carrier nor a transport gas is needed. Hence, the loss of input energy can be minimized. The pyrolyser fits into a standard 40 feet container. The BTO process can accept standard wood chips or chopped straw. No further grinding or milling is necessary as is the case with fluidised bed reactors. - Several runs were completed to identify weak points, test design capacity, bio-oil quality by measuring viscosity, water and solids content, and chemical composition. - The promising results obtained so far led to the order for a 48 Mg/d plant which will be erected in Malliß, 140 km southeast of Hamburg.
