Undong, S.A.
This study was conducted in the province of Lanao del Sul [Philippines] wherein 10 top cassava-producing barangays [villages] in the municipalities of Balabagan and Malabang were surveyed and assessed for soil quality. Soil quality was determined using qualitative and quantitative methods of measurement based on the modified scorecard developed by Vderstad (2016) and USDA (2001). Soil physical, chemical, and biological properties were measured through actual observation and laboratory analysis. A benchmark survey on the socio-demographic and economic profiles and farming practices related to cassava production was also conducted involving a total of 50 farmer respondents. Percentile, and mean were used in the analyses of variables. Correlation analyses were used to determine the relationship of variables to soil quality. Based on the soil quality assessment using the modified scorecard, it was found that barangay Matling and Purakan have significantly higher soil quality index. Farmers with high education levels and attended training related to cassava production tend to have good soil quality. Moreover, farmers who practice rest periods obtained good soil quality status. Same result was found from those cassava farmers who follow schedule for planting. In addition, farmers who use the recommended rate of fertilizers obtain a good soil quality status. On the other hand, combined fertilization such as synthetic and organic fertilizers is highly associated with soil quality. The same also applies to pest and weed management The practice of rest periods and planting of peanuts and mung beans also contribute to good soil quality. It was also found out that soil quality directly influences the yield of cassava. That is when soil quality is high, cassava yield is also high. Overall, this study proved good farming practices improves soil health.
