Role of endomycorrhizas on nursery and field growth of Parkia timoriana (DC.) Merr and in sustaining beneficial association in selected urban landscape trees in Metro Manila, Philippines

Rapid urbanization is a challenge in promoting a nature-based landscaping in the country. This study explored the role of endomycorrhizas in urban landscaping through the initiation of fungal association with nursery-grown Parkia timoriana (DC.) Merr., seedlings, evaluating their effects in field resiliency, and assessing diversity of local endomycorrhizal fungi towards a sustainable urban tree landscape. Nursery and field experiments were conducted following Randomized Complete Block Design to determine endomycorrhizal colonization and diversity to enhance plant growth and sustain urban landscape. Preliminary findings indicated that indigenous Parkia timoriana (DC.) Merr. formed vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAMF) when inoculated in the nursery. Addition of VAMF to P. timoriana (DC.) Merr. enhanced (p0.05) field growth in root biomass and significantly (p0.05) accumulated zinc in shoot possibly due to high concentration in soil. Level of copper was considerable on soil underscoring the importance of VAMF in enhancing resilience in urban areas. Phosphorus level under mixed tree landscape was compensated by higher diversity of endomycorrhizas that likely explain water and nutrient absorption. These findings provided valuable insights on the role of endomycorrhizas in sustainable urban tree landscaping but requires further ecological investigation on nature-based strategies in urban greening initiatives.
