Bluetongue (sheep catarrhal fever) and the threat of its spread in Georgia.
2023
Vector-associated diseases have had a significant impact on animal and human health. Vectors can spread viral, bacterial and parasitic infections both between animals and from animals to humans. Global climate change in the world has had a certain impact on environmental conditions, which in turn led to the migration of animal diseases (including especially vector-borne diseases) to areas where these diseases were not reported before. This is also facilitated by international trade. Blutongue (BT) (sheep catarrhal fever) belongs to the group of such diseases. Cases of the disease are reported in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and several islands of the tropics and subtropics. Among the neighbouring countries of Georgia, Blutongue is reported in the territory of Turkey and the Russian Federation. The virus especially circulates in areas where the winter climate allows the insects (vectors) to survive and maintain their life cycle. Ref. 12.
