The Yellowatsave project has required using remote sensing techniques in order to solve general purpose mapping, modeling and up-scaling difficulties due to the huge size of the case study areas under concern. Remote sensing has been used to provide spatial information for accurate canal mapping, density of canals at the tertiary level, density of villages, delimitation of cropping areas and assessment of induced salinity concerns. Several methodological approaches, various sensors (SPOT, LANDSAT 5, LANDSAT 7 and ERS1) and various image processing methods are applied, compared and evaluated. Extensive use of the Normalised Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) was made to assess cropping conditions. The assessment of salinity in the Qingtongxia system has shown that about 25% of the area is affected by salinity.
