The financing of electricity undertakings and the rate - fixing problem

In the early years of the century, when electricity was beginning to be used for supplying power requirements, it Was produced and distributed by private under takings. But the economic and social importance, of the development of: electric power supply led the public authorities to take an interest in the matter, and has resulted, in a number of countries, in the complete or partial disappearance of private companies and their gradual replacement by municipal provincial and partly or wholly nationalized undertakings. Thus in France, Greece, L. Ireland and the United Kingdom electric power is solely or principally provided by a nationalized industry. In the People's Republics of Eastern Europe the electricity service, is usually run by the State and comes directly under the Ministry of Power.
