Causes of discarding pigs in farms of central western region of Venezuela during the 1996-2002 period | Causas de descarte de cerdas en granjas de la región centro occidental de Venezuela durante el período 1996-2002

Английский. To determine the causes of discarding pigs in farms in the western region of Venezuela was the aim of this study. Data were collected from 6565 (F1 Landrace x Largewhite) sows discarded during 1996-2002 period from five farms that fulfilled the following criteria of quality: inventory of sows, record of complete cycles and not been in stage of foundation, repopulation or expansion, and also with a maximum of 5% of events as mounts, farrowing and weaning not registered. Data were analyzed by statistic description of variables, distributed according to the number of farrowing. A total of 21 causes of elimination were established and grouped in six discarding reasons: reproduction, locomotion, age, production, disease, and death. The latter cause was 5.4%, while reproduction reached the highest value (41.3%) which mainly affected females with 0, 1, or 2 farrowing. Locomotion represented 18.5% of discarding, especially in the groups of 1 and 7-8 farrowing; the fallen sows were 55.8% within this category. By age were eliminated 17.9% of the sows, mainly in animals with more than 6 farrowing. Production represented 10.5%, focused in reduced number of weaned pigs/year, especially in sows of 3 to 5 farrowing. In conclusion, there was an elevated value of discarding due to reproductive reasons which decrease the productive indexes (low number of farrowing, amount of weaned pigs, and permanence in farm). It is necessary to establish handling programs that reduce discarding by reproductive causes in order to optimize the productivity.

El objetivo del estudio fue determinar las causas de descarte en granjas porcinas de la región Centro Occidental de Venezuela durante el período 1996–2002, par alo cual se recolectaron 6.565 datos de hembras F1 Landrace x Largewhite descartadas en cinco granjas que cumplían los criterios de calidad de datos: llevar inventario de cerdas, ser de ciclo completo, no en etapa de fundación, repoblación o expansión, con un máximo del 5% de eventos (monta, parto y destete) no registrados. Los datos se analizaron mediante estadística descriptiva de las variables, distribuidas según el número de partos. Se establecieron 21 causas de eliminación, agrupadas en seis razones de descarte: reproducción, locomoción, edad, producción, enfermedad y muerte. Esta última causa fue del 5,4%, mientas que la razón reproducción alcanzo el mayor valor (41,3%) la cual afectó mayoritariamente a las hembras de 0, 1 y 2. La locomoción representó el 18,5% de descarte, especialmente en los grupos de 1 hasta 7-8 partos. El 17,9% de las cerdas fueron eliminadas por edad, principalmente las mayores a 6 partos. Las razón producción representó el 10,5%, focalizada en reducido número de lechones destetados/año, especialmente en cerdas de 3 a 5 partos. En conclusión hubo un elevado número de descartes por razones reproductivas en detrimento de los índices productivos (bajo número de partos, menor cantidad de lechones destetados y disminuida permanencia en granja). Es necesario establecer programas de manejo que reduzcan los descartes por causas reproductivas para optimizar la productividad.
