Teramnus labialis : promissory legume for the diversified production in citric farms | Teramnus labialis : leguminosa promisoria para la producción diversificada en fincas citrícolas

In this work we determined the effect of the covering of Teramnus labialis on some physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil, the citric tree, and the quality of the fruits, comparing them with those obtained in cultures with natural covering and without protection. Values of organic matter, pH, and available phosphorus were higher for the first alternative. Similarly, the contents of humidity, total specific volume of pores and air, the coefficient of structure, and the percentage of water stable aggregates in the soil were higher with the covering of T. labialis. These benefits explain the significant increments in the production of these fruit-bearing, without affectations in the indexes of quality of its juice. We conclude that the introduction of leguminous in the covering constitutes an effective alternative for the management of citric ecosystems because these plants improve the biological, chemical and physical properties of the soil without affect the nutrition of citric trees and the quality of their fruits.

En este trabajo se determinó el efecto de la cobertura viva de Teramnus labialis sobre algunas propiedades físicas, químicas y biológicas del suelo, el árbol de cítricos y la calidad de los frutos, comparándolos con los obtenidos en un cultivo con cobertura natural y otro sin protección. Se obtuvieron valores de materia orgánica, pH y fósforo disponible superiores en la primera alternativa. De igual forma, los contenidos de humedad, el volumen específico total de poros y de aire, el coeficiente de estructura y el porcentaje de agregados estables al agua en el suelo fueron superiores con la cobertura de T. labialis. Los beneficios antes referidos explicaron los incrementos significativos en la producción de estos frutales, sin afectaciones en los índices de calidad de su jugo. Se concluye que la introducción de la leguminosa en la cobertura del agroecosistema de cítricos constituye una alternativa eficaz para el manejo de estos agroecosistemas, pudiendo constituir una fuente de alimentación para los pequeños rumiantes, además de mejorar sustancialmente las propiedades biológicas, químicas y físicas del suelo, sin afectar la nutrición de los árboles cítricos y la calidad de sus frutos.
