Diversity and characterization of isolated phosphate-solubilizing bacteria from paddy field soils in the Philippines

Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient for growth and development of plants. In soil, P is easily fixed with Ca2+, Fe2+, and Al3+ making it unavailable for plant uptake. Hence, P deficiency is rampant which commonly occurs especially in the tropics and limits agricultural productivity; consequently, there is a tendency to supplement more chemical P fertilizers in crop production. Utilization of phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSM) in agriculture serves as an alternative to chemical fertilizers and approach for more efficient P fertilization. Thus, this study aims to isolate inorganic phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) from soils planted with rice in the Philippines and evaluate their potential as microbial inoculant. Soils from paddy fields were collected and P analysis was carried out. Isolation of PSB was done using various inorganic phosphates. Finally, the isolates were genetically characterized and their abilities to solubilize phosphates and promote plant growth were evaluated. In this study, only 2% of total soil P was accounted for absorbable P and calcium bound P as dominant form. The types and number of isolated PSB may be affected by the fertilizer management regime and the soil type of the paddy field sources in the Philippines. Findings on the diversity led to the first description of Franconibacter and Ideonella for phosphate solubilization trait. Moreover, the PSBs obtained could potentially be developed as microbial inoculants for various soil types with different P fixation capacities.
