Exploratory investigation of adlai production under an organic management approach in calcareous soil of Leyte, Philippines

Adlai (Coix lacryma-jobi L.), an underutilized cereal crop in the Philippines, holds promise as an energy source akin to rice and corn, suitable for cultivation in rainfed dependent regions. Although tribes in Mindanao [Philippines] consider adlai a staple, it remains relatively unknown due to a lack of information. A first-time adlai planting endeavor was carried out in Northwestern Leyte, Visayas, from December 4, 2022, to May 15, 2023. The primary objective was to assess adaptability and specifically determine productivity under various treatments: T1 - no fertilizer, T2 - 60-60-60 N-P sub 2 O sub 5-K sub 2, T3 - Carabao manure (20 t/ha), T4 - Chicken manure (20 t/ha), T5 - Goat manure (20 t/ha), and T6 - Vermicast (10 t/ha). The study employed a randomized complete block design with three replications. Adlai var Kiboa was planted in 3 x 3 sq m plots at a spacing of 20 cm between plants and 75 cm between rows, resulting in a population of 60 plants per plot or 66,667 per hectare. Well-decomposed farm manures were incorporated two weeks before planting, while inorganic fertilizer 14-14-14 was applied basally. Findings indicated a consistent 70% germination rate across treatments, with flowering and maturity occurring at 106 and 130 days after sowing (DAS), respectively. T2 plots exhibited significantly taller plants (222.48 cm), the highest number of tillers (7), leaf production (15), panicle count (18), and grain yield (609.44 kg/ha) statistically comparable to other treatments, excluding T1. Successful adlai adaptation in the region could contribute to food security and sustainable utilization of calcareous marginal upland soils in Leyte. Further research is recommended, including evaluating different adlai varieties across varying growing seasons and locations in the island.
