The economic significance of spiny lobsters, Panulirus japonicus and Panulirus stimpsoni, is substantial in South Korea. However, their biological characteristics are not well documented. We aimed to elucidate the population distribution, relationship between carapace length and body weight, and condition factors. We also investigated the stages of egg development in P. stimpsoni. Our findings revealed that both species displayed significant correlations between carapace length and body weight, with negative allometric growth coefficients. Notably, P. japonicus exhibited a more significant allometric growth trend than P. stimpsoni. The condition factors consistently exceeded 1.00, with P. japonicus females displaying a notably higher condition factor when compared to P. stimpsoni females. Molting behaviors differed between the two species, with P. stimpsoni primarily molting in May and from August to October, while P. japonicus molted less frequently. In terms of egg development, P. stimpsoni progressed through four distinct stages, reaching Stage 4 after approximately one month. These stages were marked by significant changes in egg diameter and coloration, including the emergence of eye spots. This study not only enhances understanding of these spiny lobster species but also provides valuable insights required for their sustainable management in South Korea, addressing gaps in the biological and ecological knowledge of these species.
