Assessing translocation success to improve conservation practices of threatened woody species and restore forests in Reunion Island

Английский. In Reunion Island, the destruction of lowland ecosystems and invasive species are the leading causes of indigenous species extinction, particularly in semi-dry forests and rainforests. In 2014 and 2021, two conservation projects involving 20 threatened woody species enabled the planting of 1666 individuals across 25 sites targeted for ecological restoration. This study aims to identify the key factors determining the success of these translocations. We elaborated multispecific mixed models to identify factors impacting survival and growth 3 years after in situ plantation. 50.6 % of initially planted individuals are still alive after 3 years, and recruitment seedlings have been observed for two species. Individual care in the nursery is crucial: an individual in good health has a 2.28 times increased chance of surviving compared to a plant in poor initial health. Survival rates are also higher in higher altitudes. Growth is enhanced by unrestricted root development in the nursery (containers > 3 l) and higher maximum temperatures combined with sufficient plant available water in the soil. These promising results support scaling up future plantations, accompanied by restoration measures to maximise the chances of establishing viable and self-sustaining populations.

À La Réunion, la destruction des milieux de basse altitude et les invasions biologiques sont les principales causes d'extinction des espèces végétales indigènes, notamment dans les forêts tropicales semi-sèches et humides. En 2014 et 2021, deux projets de conservation de 20 espèces ligneuses menacées ont permis de planter 1666 individus sur 25 sites ciblés pour de la restauration écologique. Cette étude vise à identifier les leviers déterminant le succès de ces translocations. Nous avons élaboré des modèles mixtes multispécifiques pour déterminer les facteurs impactant la survie et la croissance après 3 ans. Le taux de survie global est de 50.6 % après 3 ans, et du recrutement a été observé pour deux espèces. Le soin en pépinière est primordial : un plant en bon état initial a 2,28 fois plus de chances de survivre qu’un plant en mauvais état. Les taux de survie sont également meilleurs en altitude. La croissance est favorisée par un bon développement racinaire en pépinière (pots> 3 l) et des températures maximales élevées combinées à une réserve utile suffisante. Ces résultats prometteurs encouragent à poursuivre ces plantations à plus large échelle, accompagnées de mesures de restauration pour maximiser les chances d’établir des populations viables et autonomes.
