This study evaluated the effects of remittances on the poverty status of rural farm households in Abak Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study evaluated the contributions of the different economic sources to income and consumption of the rural farm households, compared income between remittance receiving households and non-remittance receiving households and analyzed poverty status among rural farm households with and without remittances. A simple random sampling procedure was used to select 89 respondents for the study. Primary data were collected through the aid of a well-structured questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Z test and Foster, Greer and Thorbeck (FGT) model. The findings showed that 59 of the households received remittances, while 30 households did not. Agriculture is the primary source of income for both households in the study area. The contribution from agriculture to households’ consumption was 31.1% and 49.7% for remittance receiving households and non-remittance receiving households respectively. The results showed that 33.9% of remittance-receiving households and 36.7% of non-receiving households live below the poverty line. The comparative analysis between the income of remittance and non-remittance households showed that there was a significant difference between the incomes of the two groups. It was therefore recommended that government should create more agricultural opportunities for non-remittance receiving households to enhance agricultural productivity via training, design targeted for poverty alleviation programs for diversification of income sources.
