COLLECTION AND CLASSIFICATION OF MARINE LITTER: OPPORTUNITY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINING OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS | RECOGIDA Y CLASIFICACIÓN DE BASURAS MARINAS: OPORTUNIDAD PARA LA FORMACIÓN AMBIENTAL DE ESTUDIANTES UNIVERSITARIOS

Introduction:The collection and classification of marine litter can contribute from a citizen science perspective to the environmental training of students.Objective:To encourage active participation and skills among university students to address environmental problems related to unsustainable consumption habits and poor waste management through citizen science.Materials and Methods:The intervention took place in a natural coastal environment. A closed questionnaire was used to characterize the knowledge and attitude of young people about the environment and their knowledge about marine litter. A training workshop was held focusing on the content referred to and to guide the work of collecting and classifying marine litter on a beach according to material, possible original function and colour of the pieces.Results and Discussion:Although the theoretical knowledge of the topics covered is acceptably good, the workshop delved deeper into the subject and prepared the students for the task. This, together with a positive attitude and desire to learn, allowed two collections of marine litter on a beach and its classification. Plastic pieces associated with the food industry predominate, particularly flasks and lids. The most abundant colours are white, blue and black. Some have specimens of molluscs and cirripedians attached.Conclusions:The intervention contributed to the environmental education of students, fostered the development of research skills and reported data for researchers and managers who address the management of waste of anthropogenic origin.

Introducción:La recolección y clasificación de basuras marinas puede contribuir desde una perspectiva de ciencia ciudadana a la formación ambiental de estudiantes.Objetivo:Fomentar, en estudiantes universitarios, la participación activa y las habilidades para, desde la ciencia ciudadana, enfrentar problemas ambientales relacionados con posturas no sostenibles de consumo y mala gestión de residuos.Materiales y Métodos:La intervención tuvo lugar en un entorno natural costero. Mediante un cuestionario cerrado se caracterizó el conocimiento y actitud de los jóvenes sobre el medio ambiente y el conocimiento sobre basuras marinas. Se realizó un taller de capacitación enfocado en el contenido referido y para orientar la labor de recolección y clasificación de basuras marinas en una playa según material, posible función original y color de las piezas.Resultados y Discusión:Si bien el conocimiento teórico de los aspectos tratados es aceptablemente bueno, el taller profundizó en la temática y preparó a los estudiantes para la labor. Esto, junto a una actitud favorable y deseos de aprendizaje, permitieron realizar dos recogidas de basuras marinas en una playa y su clasificación. Predominan piezas plásticas asociadas a la industria alimentaria, en particular frascos y tapas. Los colores más abundantes son blanco, azul y negro. Algunas portan adheridos especímenes de moluscos y cirripedios.Conclusiones:La intervención contribuyó a la formación ambiental de los estudiantes, propició el desarrollo de habilidades investigativas y reportó datos para los investigadores y los gestores que abordan el manejo de basura de origen antropogénico.
