Contribution to the productive sector in Guisa, through the execution of an international project | Contribución al sector productivo en Guisa, mediante la ejecución de un proyecto internacional

The project “Revitalization of Cuban coffee growing, pilot model Guisa municipality, Granma province” was implemented between 2016 and 2023 to strengthen coffee production in a key region of Cuba, affected by low yields and technological limitations. Funded by the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development (AICS), the overall objective was to increase yields up to 0.4 t/ha in demonstration areas, improve the quality of coffee for export and train 467 local actors. Innovative technologies were introduced, such as irrigation systems, solar drying, integrated pest management and agroecological techniques, in addition to establishing demonstration plots and germplasm banks. The results showed a 232% increase in production between 2014 and 2019, reaching 179 tons of exportable quality coffee. Processing efficiency was improved and environmental impact was reduced through sustainable technologies. The training sessions strengthened the skills of producers and technicians, promoting the participation of women and young people. The project not only revitalized coffee growing in Guisa, but also served as a replicable model for other coffee-growing regions in Cuba.

El proyecto “Revitalización de la caficultura cubana, modelo piloto municipio Guisa, provincia Granma” se implementó entre 2016 y 2023 para fortalecer la producción cafetalera en una región clave de Cuba, afectada por bajos rendimientos y limitaciones tecnológicas. Financiado por la Agencia Italiana para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo (AICS), el objetivo general fue incrementar los rendimientos hasta 0.4 t/ha en áreas demostrativas, mejorar la calidad del café para la exportación y capacitar a 467 actores locales. Se introdujeron tecnologías innovadoras, como sistemas de riego, secado solar, manejo integrado de plagas y técnicas agroecológicas, además de establecer parcelas demostrativas y bancos de germoplasma. Los resultados mostraron un aumento del 232% en la producción entre 2014 y 2019, alcanzy te 179 toneladas de café de calidad exportable. Se mejoró la eficiencia en el procesamiento y se redujo el impacto ambiental mediante tecnologías sostenibles. Las capacitaciones fortalecieron las habilidades de productores y técnicos, que promovieron la participación de mujeres y jóvenes. El proyecto no solo revitalizó la caficultura en Guisa, sino que también sirvió como modelo replicable para otras regiones cafetaleras de Cuba.
